it's a big order, you are often given the opportunity to
preview an actual item with your logo in place. This
product review is impossible on a tight schedule. Give
yourself enough time to get a sample, live with that
sample for a few days, and then place your order with
no rush charges.
I'll add a pre-emptive response here. Bosses are
known to casually mention that items are needed to
distribute at a board meeting in four days. It's not
always your fault that you're in a rush, which is all the
more reason to plan ahead when you can.
When possible, work with a sales
representative. It's tempting to buy merchandise
online, but consider how much easier your job could
be working with a sales rep. Put that person to work
by explaining your needs and asking for five ideas.
You might say, "I need 50 items for an employee
recognition lunch in 30 days and my budget is $8 to
$10 per item. The recipients are all ages, men and
women." The sales rep will arrive with five items
for you to examine. When you're budgeting for a
purchase, don't forget setup charges, sales tax and
shipping fees, as they can significantly increase your
final invoice.
What prompted this month's topic was a recent
search for a particular promotional item for a client.
My takeaway from visiting the various promotional
item websites is that there is a lot of junk out there.
Choose your items with care, and examine them before
you place your order. My personal rule for selecting
an item has always been that I only give something
I would want, wear, eat or put on my desk. If I don't
want to wear it, use it, eat it or display it, why would I
foist it on someone else? q
