pps, the shorthand term for software applications that run on devices,
also known as tablets like the iPad, are technology's dandelions. They
grow in fields defined by their operating system, Apple's iOS and
Google's Android, and they bloom every day all year long. Wading into either
yard and searching for "aviation apps" is a windy-day cloud of puffball seeds.
There are thousands of them, each performing some aviation-related task a
developer can imagine on a warm and sunny spring day.
Such variety allows you to find exactly what you want and need, but such
variety also is an open-arm invitation to confusion, a parasite that feeds on
focused efficiency. One sure sign of this infection is an app-filled display
and the frustration of trying to remember which one performs the desired
task, and then finding it. The time lost may not be of harmful consequence
at the coffee shop, but this is less likely true in the cockpit, especially in
IFR weather.
Making sense of the apps a tablet brings to the cockpit was the pilot's
challenge, not the avionics shop. But that changed with the introduction
of wireless cockpit networks and the apps' ability to display ADS-B's
traffic and weather information, not to mention geo-referenced VFR and
IFR charts. Rare is the pilot who does not fly today without a tablet,
so seamlessly integrating it with an avionics system is key to customer
satisfaction, especially when ADS-B is part of the upgrade.
When discussing an avionics upgrade, what apps a shop's customer
flies with, or plans to start flying with, should be addressed during the
initial conversation, not an afterthought, because it plays a deciding role
in hardware selection. For example, when panel space or budget do not
