should be ready with a solution,
and able to demonstrate the
alternative on the shop's tablet.
And some customers may wish to
acquire their first tablet and app
with their avionics upgrade.
When considering this, said
Garmin's Jessica Koss, "pilots
should evaluate the reputation
of the app developer, features,
ease of use, avionics integration,
as well as available training
materials. Whether downloading
your first app, or switching
apps, it is important to dedicate
time to learning the features and
functionality of the product."
When looking at tablets, being
a computer, it cannot have too
much memory. At a minimum, said
Hilton's Jim Sweeney, it should
have at least 32 gigabytes of
memory. An app typically consumes
350 megabytes, and an airport
database of businesses, services
obstacles, and terrain - but no charts
or approach plates - consumes
another 1.5 gigabytes. For those
looking at the iPad, he recommends
the cellphone option. "It is the only
way to get built-in GPS capability,
and it also allows pilots to download
chart updates while on the ground,
if they cannot access Wi-Fi. Another
option is to create a Wi-Fi hotspot
with their smartphones."
A connection to aircraft power
is another important consideration.
Pilots can preserve the tablet's
battery life by turning off
background app refresh and 3G/LTE
cellular data and Wi-Fi or Bluetooth
if not required for the cockpit
network connection, and they can
keep the screen clean and adjust its
brightness to the lowest viewable
level. But Murphy's law prevails,
and batteries will run out of juice
when the pilot needs the app most.
A USB adapter for the "cigarette
lighter" power port is an option, but
a dedicated USB power port wired

into the panel is more reliable.
Another factor related to safety
is how the pilot will mount the
tablet in the cockpit. For VFR
pilots, in most cases a kneeboard
mount will suffice. But the
rhythmic viewing nod invites
vertigo on IFR flights. Here a yoke

mount, or a suction-cup mount on
the windshield or side window,
better positions the tablet in the
pilot's field of view. Naturally,
this is a process of trial and error,
because the tablet must not impede
the pilot's view of the instruments
or the outside world. q
