Hagans has the philosophy that you can't expect quality in the
end unless you go through a process. On-the-job and classroom
training is the foundation on which the quality process is built.
As a longtime pilot with several type ratings and many hours,
Hagans has the idea of training ingrained. With pilots, especially
professional pilots, training is constant. Pilots need training to stay
prepared. This mindset flows through the entire organization. As a
result, Eagle Creek employs Mike Grabbe as the quality control and
training manager. Grabbe was a factory service representative at
the Aero Commander Division of Gulfstream Aerospace, and later
spent more than six years at FlightSafety International as director
of maintenance training in FSI's Twin Commander program.
Calculating investment returns for training can be difficult.
Richard Branch, the company's vice president said, "Mike and I
have been at a lot of events where we win awards. One result of our
training philosophy is stronger customer commitment, and another
is employee satisfaction."
For example, multiple times, the company has won Service
Center of the Year from Commander Aircraft. Eagle Creek Aviation
considers its employees to be valuable, and the company rewards
them for the training.
"Our investment in training results in better work, and happier
customers," Branch added. "We have few returns with problems."
One way to estimate the return on training investment is to compare profitability before training started and after it is established.
Since Eagle Creek included continuous and recurrent training from
the beginning, there is no before time to compare. Eagle Creek has
always recognized the value of training among technicians, and it
definitely works as a successful business practice. q
