instruments. And costs range from a
few thousand, up.
An aircraft owner stands to shave
several pounds off the operating empty
weight of an aircraft by ditching the
analog six pack and installing one of the
many attractive options for a primary
flight display system and its built-in
attitude and air-data sensors.
Lighter weight and using less power
applies to the available digitally driven
VHF nav/comms on the market - many
of which allow remote control via the
PFD display.
In the end, they all bring their benefits. And customers count on shops to
help them fulfill their panel dreams, in
one fell swoop, or phased in as funds
are available.
The phased upgrade can yield the
same result as an all-at-once full makeover: Meeting the ADS-B mandate,
moving to all-digital flight instruments,
and gaining the benefits of GPS-direct
navigation and GPS precision-approach
capabilities.
Defining needs -
the questions to answer
Consider these questions when helping an aircraft owner plan an upgraded
panel:
VFR only? Or sometimes IFR?
No need for an installed WAAS GPS
navigator when the pilot flies only day,
VFR. A good electronic flight bag can
provide the graphic navigation guidance.
Navigation preferences: The day,
VFR-only pilot can easily get by with
a hand-held GPS navigator, but may
prefer a panel-mounted for some of the
benefits available - weather options,
airport information and more.
Flight instruments: Six pack or
PFD, we still need some basic instruments to meet both FAA regulations, as
well as to aid us if weather becomes an
issue, day or night. A PFD like Aspen
Avionics' Evolution 1000 PFD can replace six instruments by removing two
- and also offers an avenue to replace

a couple of those old swinging-needle
navigation indicators. With every
analog instrument removed, the plane
gets light; lighter empty weight, more
capacity for fuel, people or stuff.

owners with old-technology autopilots,
here's another area ripe for improv-

ing the aircraft. Modern control units
and servos tend to weigh less, operate on less electricity, even consume
less power. But a pilot used to flying
long cross-country flights without an
autopilot can gain a hand - a hand that
