wire loom containing conductors that
may produce conflicting electric fields.
Obtaining the knowledge that use of a
double-shielded cable in certain areas
had previously produced favorable

results can be most valuable when
creating a work scope.
Most new generation air transport
(Part 25) aircraft comply with Federal
Aviation Regulation 25.1701 covering
electrical wiring interface systems.
This concept was enacted as a result
of studying the effects of aging on
wiring systems and was prompted
as a result of several noteworthy
aircraft accidents. EWIS does provide
a structured method of dealing with
wiring starting with the design
phase, installations, operation and
continued airworthiness. Numerous
airworthiness agencies, including
both the European Aviation Safety
Agency and the Federal Aviation
Administration, have adopted
guidance and effective training
programs to promote awareness of
aircraft wiring. Advisory Circular
25.1701-1 issued by the FAA provides
a clear perspective on the attributes
of proper wiring installation and
inspection and is a good starting
point of study for technicians about to
undertake a high-tech project.
Preparation also should include a
review of the current aircraft weight
and balance along with a validation
of the electrical load analysis. Many
forget that connectivity systems
empower passengers with portable
electronic devices, and should
the installation not include device
recharging provisions, then system
usefulness has been diminished.
Planning is essential to a predictable
project outcome as well as meeting the
expectations of the end users. After all,
it would be a shame to discover after
the project completion that as a result
of added equipment weight, mission
restrictions were imposed. Also
realizing the electrical system does not
have the capacity to meet the needs
of the newly installed equipment can
often place a damper on an otherwise
flawless project.
Indeed, failure to plan is a plan to
