Don Jones of CKC

ounded in 1973, CKC Laboratories offers EMC testing and
design consultation services.
Its facilities employ a wide variety of test
equipment and one of the broadest accreditation scopes in the industry. CKC's
four satellite labs are operated by a staff
of professional EMC engineers.
Recently, Avionics News spoke with
Don Jones to learn about his work and
his life outside the lab.
What's your current position
at CKC Laboratories?
I'm the local lab manager and senior
staff EMC engineer. We have four
locations in Brea, California; Fremont,
California; Mariposa, California; and
Bothell, Washington, where I am. We
call this the Canyon Park office since it's
in an industrial park and that's how it's
known locally.

How long have you
worked there?
For 18 years. I started as an EMC
test engineer and worked my way up
through the ranks.

this lab, our main market share is the
aerospace industry, so we'll review their
testing needs and away we go. We also
support MIL-STD-461 and a plethora of
commercial EMC compliance standards.

Where did you work
before CKC Labs?
I spent 15 years at Crane
Aerospace working as an electrical
designer and engineer in Lynnwood,
Washington.

Does testing take one day or
is it a multiday event?
Good question. It varies with most
compliance projects - no matter if they
are commercial, aerospace or military
in application, they require a minimum
of 12 hours of testing on average, while
more complex projects run in excess of
200 hours of lab time. We do a lot of
precertification testing where people
will come in and test RF emissions,
either radiated or conducted. This would
include lightning and RF susceptibility
precompliance testing.
This lab is equipped with two lightning
test systems that allows us to handle two
clients needing the same thing at the
same time.
CKC does a lot of precompliance RF
susceptibility testing, and the company
has invested heavily into this specialty.
There are several different test methods
to accomplish this, and we use them
all. Some of the most common tests
conducted are RF susceptibility and radiated RF susceptibility. Of those tests, the
radiated RF susceptibility is an interesting bird in that there are two methods
in which this testing can be done - in
a semi-anechoic chamber, and we also
have a reverberation chamber.
In a semi-anechoic chamber, the
threat levels range from 1 volt per meter
to 200 volts per meter. For high-intensity
radiated fields testing, we use our new
reverberation chamber to reach threat

Are you a Washington
native?
I'm a Boeing baby. I was born in
Helena, Montana, and at about age
2 or so, my dad, who graduated from
Montana State University, loaded up
the family and moved to Seattle to
take a job at Boeing. He was a manufacturing engineer and then went into
accounting and dealt with custom
orders. So Washington has always
been home.
What's a typical day
for you?
Normally, we try to arrive 15 to 30
minutes before our customers so we
can get the equipment ready. We're a
service lab, and customers will schedule testing appointments with us. We
have a staff of six engineers on-site,
including me, and that's the way all
of our labs are set up. Brea has three
engineers, Fremont has five, and
Mariposa has four.
When the customer arrives, we'll
review their project and make sure
we're all on the same page, and we'll
set them up for the day's testing. In
