Recognizing hazards can be an individual thing, closely
associated to your personal risk tolerance, even when you
are aware the margins for error in aviation are slim and
constantly shifting. Frontline personnel are continuously
having to juggle personal and professional aspects of
safety.
For example, it is known that senior aviation personnel
may have no qualms jumping out of a helicopter to
snowboard/ski down a remote mountain at high speeds,
but will squirm when they find a less-than-optimal
lockwire job on an aircraft.
What did you do to minimize any resistance to SMS
implementation?
Management must be careful not to destroy the overall
faith in the system, or it will be a long and hard path to get
on track. Sorry to use this kind of language, but it is the
only way to describe the consequences. It is about change,
which we all resist.

What is your best bit of advice to other AEA member shops
about an SMS program?
Keep an open mind. You're likely already practicing most of
what is expected. Guide your accountable executive/manager to
the benefits that will be realized, tempered with the reality that it's
not a 100 percent solution. Accidents can still happen; they're just
a lot less likely.
Make sure the SMS program you select fits the size and
scope of your company. Avoid Black Box solutions. Develop it
yourself, and enlist your subject-matter experts (employees) to
make it your own. Enlist the aid of your peers (AEA) that may
have already implemented a system. Collaboration when it comes
to improving safety is OK and should be expected to realize
common problems and solutions.
Don't forget that human factors is the root of this system.
While aircraft are safe on their own, it's when humans interact
with aircraft that things start to happen. People tend to cringe at
the word safety or hang on it like there is nothing more important.
Find a way to relate the intent of safety without saying the word.
I like the words vigilant and mindful used in the same
sentence. It's what we as maintainers are. Stated in this way,
safety becomes the resulting product that everyone expects. q
