Garmin said the 510 would begin shipping in September
with a list price of $1,495, complete with both Wi-Fi and
Bluetooth wireless capability. That capability makes it
possible to link the GTN 650 or GTN 750, as well as a
pair of Android devices that run Garmin Pilot. And good
news for Android users - the Garmin Pilot app supports
both Apple and Android devices.
With this capability, pilots using either Garmin Pilot
or ForeFlight Mobile can create flight plans on their
respective tablets before transferring the flight plan
to a GTN navigator. For operators flying aircraft with
Garmin's GSR 56 datalink/Iridium satcom installed
Flight Stream 510 allows pairing of an Apple iPhone
or iPad to a GTN, allowing both text and voice calling
from the pilots own mobile phone via Garmin Pilot -
including phone calls over a headset.
And should the GTN be interfaced with
Garmin's GTX 345 ADS-B transponder
or GDL 88 ADS-B datalink,
the Flight Stream 510
enables display of ADS-B
In traffic and weather when
the mobile device operates
on Garmin Pilot or ForeFlight.
Benefits include providing the
mobile device with GPS location
information from the GTN's WAAS
GPS navigator.
Further, the 510 can share with
mobile devices the AHRS output from
both G500 and G600 displays, allowing
the MultiMedia card to drive attitude
indicators and synthetic vision data. The same
information also may be shared with Garmin's portables
- as noted, traffic and weather on Garmin's aera 795
and aera 796, and wireless flight plan transfer, weather,
traffic and backup attitude on the aera 660.
And Garmin's new Concierge function helps 510
users keep their databases up-to-date.
Once an operator completes the initial setup between
Connext and Flight Stream 510, they can optimize
Garmin Pilot to automatically download the most up-todate data in the application every time a new database
cycle is available. If a database is downloaded prior to
its effective date, it remains in a standby position within
the GTN 650 and GTN 750 but then becomes live
automatically on the effective date of the update.
Once a connection is established between Garmin
Pilot and Flight Stream 510 at the aircraft, the software

prompts the pilot to transfer the most up-to-date
databases to the GTN, and the update transfer takes
just minutes to complete. Flight Stream 510 wirelessly
transfers the following databases to the GTN: the
Basemap; Jeppesen NavData or the new Garmin
Navigation Database; Obstacle, Terrain, SafeTaxi,
FliteCharts.
And chart streaming also allows pilots to view and
utilize departure, approach and arrival charts right away,
even while the charts database is synchronizing between
the GTN and G500 and G600 glass flight displays.
Beechjet 400A and Hawker 400XP
set to gain G5000 option
The paperwork may well be done by the time you
read this since Garmin officials heralded in late July the
imminent approval of a panel upgrade to install a
three-screen variant of the G5000 touch-controlled
integrated avionics package for the Beechjet
400A and Hawker 400XP business jets.
Garmin displayed a three-screen setup of the Beechjet/Hawker panel in its
expansive product-display building at
AirVenture. The package employs
a trio of 12-inch landscape-format
displays with softkeys; Garmin's
GTC 570 touch-sensitive
avionics controllers; a set of
flight controllers; and flightmanagement system controls mounted
in a cockpit pedestal.
According to Garmin, the switch to the G5000
package from the jet's original avionics package cuts off
a whopping 150 pounds from the jet's operating empty
weight. The G5000 hardware takes up so little space
that the swap opens up the entire right-side avionics
bay within the nose, creating additional luggage space
forward where it can increase loading flexibility.
And for experimental aircraft: new offerings
After making waves with its G3X systems, its G5 miniPFD and more for the experimental- and light-sport aircraft
segments, Garmin unveiled two new ADS-B products
aimed at the same segment. Both are controlled through
Garmin's G3X and G3X Touch primary flight display
systems. The pair are known as the GTX 35R ADS-B Out
transponder and the GTX 45R ADS-B Out/In transponders.
