Astronics Max-Viz
A wholly owned subsidiary of Astronics, Max-Viz promoted its two latest enhanced-vision sensors for experimental and light-sport aircraft, each with a
separate price point and performance level to appeal to different levels of each market.
Astronics designs its Max-Viz Enhanced Vision Systems to appeal to operators of turbine
and piston aircraft, both fixed and rotary wing. Max-Viz uses infrared sensors, signal processing, and advanced cockpit displays to show terrain, runways, taxiways, aircraft and obstacles
in poor visibility conditions, including light fog, haze, smoke, brown/whiteout, light precipitation and darkness all within a package that is small, reliable and affordable.
Astronics' latest Max-Viz offering is the X1+HR with a higher-resolution sensor - 640 by
480 pixels - and uses a long-wave infrared thermal image sensor enhanced with electronic
zoom to provide pilots of experimental and homebuilt
aircraft with a sharper, cleaner view through heavier
obstructive atmospheric conditions such as clouds,
fog and smoke. The X1+HR is compatible with any
display capable of accepting NTSC or PAL/Analog
RS-170 signals. It's priced at $18,000, plus installation.
The previously introduced Max-Viz X1 EVA employs
a sensor with a resolution of 320 by 240 pixels in a single linereplaceable unit built into aerodynamically shaped housing for easy installation. The weight, 1.2 pounds, is low enough to allow flexible mounting choices without creating weight and balance challenges. The X1 EVA also incorporates advanced safety technology
developed for higher-performance aircraft at an affordable $6,000 retail price, plus installation.
Avidyne
Avidyne unveiled a number of product updates and initiatives at EAA AirVenture, expanding
on the capabilities and versatility of its IFD line of all-in-one navigators and communicators,
as well as enhancing its existing integrated avionics packages and legacy displays.
Arguably the leading product upgrade from Avidyne was the debut of the IFD550, a followon to the company's IFD540 large-screen all-in-one navigator and communicator. The 550 features an integral attitude reference system, which gives the box the functionality of a primary
flight display's AHRS system.
When coupled with the new IFD100 app, the IFD550 can transmit a large-format synthetic
vision attitude display with three-dimensional presentation of traffic and obstacles on an iPad.
With the iPad display mounted in a bracket to allow easy removal, the display screen can be
temporarily mounted in front of the standard six
pack of flight instruments - and then easily converted back to its six-pack configuration by simply
removing the iPad from its bracket.
Avidyne displayed the concept at its booth, along
with a second exhibit display using two iPads, with
one serving as a PFD, the other as an MFD.
