used the GI Bill to get my
bachelor's degree in electrical
engineering. I was 29 years old
and a senior process engineer
at Boeing. At Boeing, my job
experience included work
on the B-52 and the Saturn
booster. Next I worked on the
F-111 at General Dynamics in
assembly process, and then
I worked for Bell Helicopter,
and then a company in East
Texas making electrostatic
precipitators, which led to my
founding of Electrodelta.
When did you get your
private license?
It was about 1990, and I just
wanted to learn to fly. It was
an effective decision, as I used
my airplane for business travel
and calling on clients. I bought
a brand new Mooney and took
delivery at the factory. I was a
vendor at the time for Mooney,
so they gave me a deal.
What do you
do for fun?
I'm still happy in design
and development work. I'm
also working with Wichita
State University where they
provide me with mentoring
and consulting. Hitek is a small
company with a big footprint.

I assume it's safe to
say that retirement
isn't in your plans.
Negative. I'm going to ride
this horse until the end. It
doesn't make sense to me to
retire. I have employees and
clients I'm responsible for.
Some like me, some don't, but
you can't satisfy everybody.
What do you do when
you're not working?
I'm still flying. I have an
RV-8, a two-seat aircraft. It's
quite fast - 200 mph, nine
gallons to the hour, so it has
a long range. I can fly to the
East Coast nonstop and to the
West Coast with one stop.
How did you decide
on an RV-8?
Funny you should ask. I'm
a Seventh-day Adventist,
and our church supports
missionaries in New Guinea.
One of the fellows who was
the chief pilot in New Guinea
was here - they have a Kodiak
and a Caravan. He lived in
our house for two weeks. I
was thinking about buying an
aircraft, and he was browsing
the internet and asked if
I'd consider an RV-8. I said,
"No, that's a Mickey Mouse
airplane - fixed gear." He said

I should take a look at the
numbers. It turns out that
it's faster than an M20J,
which is one of the fastest.
That made an impression
on me. I was willing to give
away some comfort for speed
and economy. It's a fun little
airplane to fly and a macho
airplane, and I'm a macho
type guy. I'm probably flying
35 to 100 hours a year. I used
to fly 300 a year, but I've
slowed down considerably in
every respect.
What does the
future hold?
Our company is going to
be a technology leader, with
25 to 30 employees and $5
to $7 million a year in sales
with significant technologies.
I know that Wichita State
University will help me
achieve my goals. I am WU
(Wichita University) Class of
62. That's how I sign all my
correspondence to them. I get
a big kick out of that. You're
never too old to learn. I hope
that's true. I have the usual
aches and pains, but I do a lot
of exercising of the brain. You
use it or you lose it. q
