for an installation. If you are not using
it, then start. Check it often for updates,
because the FAA changes items from
time to time in the charts from STC only
to what items can be field approved.
Currently, there are only about 15
DARs with a Function Code 51 rating
in the FAA's system. Of these, there are
only five DARs that have been given
avionics signoff authority. It can be
challenging to acquire the Function Code
51 rating because one requirement is
that you must hold an A&P certificate
(most avionics installers do not have an
A&P certificate), and you must show
a minimum of five years of experience
working with FAA inspectors writing
337s for field approvals. Another
challenge is the FSDO office that has
oversite over the DAR must have a
qualified FAA inspector who oversees
the DAR's work. Function Code 50 has
been around for a while, but it did not
have any approval authority and is being
phased out by the FAA in favor of the
Function Code 51 rating.
In all the years that I have worked
on FAA paperwork, I think this DAR
rating is one of the best tools the FAA
has given for our shops. If you are faced
with long lead times, or your FSDO
office does not perform field approvals,
then the DAR route may be an option for
you. The FAA guidance for anyone that
wants to pursue their own DAR Function
Code 51 rating is spelled out in FAA
Order 8100.17A. For a list of current
