702 Helicopters adds Part 145 repair station

hen Brian Lorenz started 702 Helicopters 10
years ago, he never imagined it would grow
beyond a small operation intended to help pay
for his Robinson R22 and the flight training he needed to fly
it. Today, Lorenz, who owns the Las Vegas Airport-based
business with his wife, Bianca, operates a fleet of seven
Robinson helicopters and two Cessna 172
aircraft for flight training and air tours over
the Las Vegas Strip and Red Rock Canyon.
The couple recently received a Part
135 certificate, which will allow them
to expand into charter operations, but
they are most excited about adding
the Part 145 repair station. Until now,
most maintenance performed was
for the company's own fleet. The repair station allows
702 Helicopters to expand its rotorcraft and fixed-wing
maintenance capabilities to outside customers.
"Bianca has her private pilot helicopter rating, is working
on her instrument ticket, and has her temporary repairman's
certificate for the Part 145," said Lorenz, an A&P, a private,
commercial, CFI‑rated helicopter pilot with more than
1,800 hours, and a soon-to-be fixed-wing pilot, too. "We
recently hired a full-time mechanic, other than myself, who
is also a pilot. Our goal is to specialize in rotorcraft because
we're all helicopter pilots."

Helicopters' repair station offers a myriad of avionics and
instrument service and installation capabilities, including
transponder and pitot-static checks, and more. Lorenz also is
exploring the ability to provide maintenance for other types of
aircraft.
"We first set out to get the 145 in the hope of becoming
a service center," Lorenz said. "We operate
Robinson Helicopters and are very interested
in the Guimbal, as well. More and more
manufacturers require you to be a Part 145
repair station before they will even allow you to
apply. Everything we knew about it at the time
was that the certification sets in place processes
and accountability. It makes you a better
company. So, we thought, let's give it a try."
Finding the AEA
Lorenz began by looking for information on starting a repair
station when he found the Aircraft Electronics Association.
While the process of obtaining a Part 145 repair station
certificate can be lengthy, Lorenz credits the AEA with helping
to speed up the process.
"The AEA is such a phenomenal resource," he said. "We
wouldn't be where we are today without the information and
the help that we've gotten from Mike Adamson, Ric Peri and
others. We wrote the manuals ourselves based on the classes
that we took with Ric. Working with the FAA on this has
