Westcan Aircraft grows its
helicopter parts business

or more than 25 years, Westcan Aircraft has
helped supply British Columbia's Thompson
Country with helicopters and rotary-wing parts.
In recent years, the company has expanded its component
sales by adding more aircraft types, larger inventories, and
shipping parts to MROs and operators around the globe.
"We have a broad customer base
spread out all over the world,"
said Brad Emsland, co-owner of
Westcan Aircraft. "Most of our
inventories are now acquired as
surplus from other operators like
during an aircraft fleet change or
fleet liquidation. These inventories
contain mainly new, serviceable or
overhauled parts."
Located at Kamloops Airport,
some 370 kilometers northeast of Vancouver, British
Columbia, Westcan Aircraft stocks more than 100,000
parts, specializing in the Bell 212 and 412. In addition
to selling direct from its facility at Kamloops, Westcan
Aircraft offers parts via two e-commerce marketplaces -
Boeing's Inventory Locator Service and PartsBase.
The company also carries Bell 205, 206, 206L, 407, and

many Eurocopter and MD 500 parts. Although 80 percent
of the company's inventory is devoted to helicopter parts,
Westcan Aircraft stocks components from a variety of fixedwing aircraft, including Cessna and Beechcraft single- and
twin-engine pistons, Pipers and Beechcraft King Airs.
Along with its parts business, Westcan Aircraft leases a
fleet of nearly 10 aircraft, including
several Bell helicopters, an MD
Helicopters MD 500D, and a
Eurocopter AS350 SD2. Clients use
the helicopters throughout Canada for
a variety of commercial operations
such as forestry, firefighting, tourism,
and supporting the oil and gas
industries. Westcan Aircraft also
offers Part 135 fixed-wing charter
services with its Piaggio 180 Avanti.
All in the family
Emsland's father, Ralph, started the company in 1990
after lamenting the high cost of new parts for his Cessna
182. To give operators another option, the entrepreneur
bought single- and twin-engine Cessna aircraft with "runout" engines or other issues, disassembled them, and sold
