ADS-B IN
The surprise avionics hit of the decade

even years ago, few gave it much respect; it
possessed "promise" but options for using
it barely existed. "Nobody's gonna pay for
that," some said. Besides, other pilots liked to tell me, "I've
already paid for equipment that does that stuff."
Now that last observation was true - but for a relatively
small percentage of the general aviation fleet. Among the
majority of the Part 23 fleet - piston singles - most lacked
a traffic-alert system, and most flew without in-cockpit
weather datalink, graphic- or text-based.
A decade ago, equipping for those two tools cost more
than the value of about one-fourth of the fleet - and near
half the value of another quarter. And, the naysayers
repeated, "it doesn't work everywhere."
Today, the value operators of general aviation's lowestvalue airplanes have long ago discovered they like and
want the tools available through Automatic Dependent
Surveillance-Broadcast In.
In the ensuing years, coverage expanded significantly,
covering the majority of the continental United States
thanks to a long-term program building and activating
ADS-B ground stations - an operational network completed
in 2014. The FAA continues to expand the network toward
a final tally approaching 800 ground stations.

Now pilots embrace the tools - they like those tools. And
they can afford the hardware. Some even mastered the skills
needed to build ADS-B In receivers of their own ... and
installed the software needed to play the graphics on their
smartphones or tablets.
That's one of the unheralded beauties of ADS-B In:
Operators don't need ADS-B Out to enjoy the benefits of
ADS-B In. This, in turn, serves as explanation for why
so many options exist to deliver ADS-B In products in so
many ways. It works, even in much of Mexico and most of
the Gulf of Mexico.
In 2016, the FAA and Mexico's air traffic service
provider, SENEAM, collaborated to expand ADS-B
surveillance coverage in the Gulf of Mexico, using multiple
ADS-B stations funded by the FAA and SENEAM. The
new ground stations benefit aircraft flying over the water
between the U.S. and the Yucatán Peninsula. The additional
ground stations in Mexico are providing seamless
surveillance coverage for air traffic routes, allowing use of
more efficient aircraft separation and increasing capacity
from the current 75 to about 85 aircraft per hour, and
providing ADS-B In products like traffic and weather
where live weather was previously available only through
subscription services.
