Obtaining basic ADS-B In can cost as little as a few
hundred dollars while delivering to pilots situationalawareness tools that once cost $15,000 to $25,000. For
those willing to tackle an electronics project, building a
functional ADS-B In receiver can cost less than $150.
And the benefits? Significant - particularly for operators
and aircraft owners not blessed with budgets to hardware
up with stand-alone systems. First up, the benefits come
subscription free after paying the only cost: hardware. As
noted, ADS-B In hardware is hardly prohibitive in cost.
But limitations exist on the extent of service available
linked to whether the aircraft is operating near an ADS-B
ground station that's active - and what kind of ADS-B Out
the aircraft employs.
What pilot wants to invest in a system that works for
only part of the benefits? Let's first look at the tools, the
benefits, of ADS-B In.
What you see is what you want
Boiled down to its most-elemental level, ADS-B
In allows equipped aircraft to "see" two types of
services: Flight Information System-Broadcast on

978 MHz and Traffic Information Service-Broadcast on
ADS-B integrated

and 1090 MHz. One gives a variety of

information, the other information on nearby
air traffic.

right?
ADS-B
coverage
Well,area
not exactly. First, just more than half the
continental U.S. is covered at 500 feet above ground level;

but that grows to more than two-thirds of the country at
1,500 AGL, to more than 80 percent at 3,000 feet AGL, and
well above 90 percent at 5,000 feet AGL. Coverage also
extends well off the coasts at and above 3,000 feet AGL

and, thanks to the
stations in the Yucatan
Peninsula, close
to the entire Gulf of Mexico.
For traffic alerts, however, TIS-B functions only if a
ground station is active because of the presence of an
ADS-B Out-equipped aircraft in its coverage area. When a
ground station is hot and responding to an ADS-B Outequipped aircraft, any ADS-B In-equipped aircraft in that
coverage area will see that aircraft and others painted by
ground-radar - because of that Out aircraft.
