The NEXRAD images update
about every 2.5 minutes, while
other data updates on either a fiveor 10-minute schedule, depending
on the data. Additionally, the
FAA reportedly is looking into
enhancing FIS-B with information
on icing and turbulence forecasts
- text and graphical - cloud tops
and lightning. If the FAA gets the
budget to support these additions -
the bandwidth already exists - these
additions would be free. Otherwise,
the agency may opt to farm out
this data to a vendor - and on a
subscription basis.
Avionics and repair shops
face an opportunity to help win
customer goodwill and possibly a
customer for that eventual need to
upgrade to ADS-B Out by guiding
prospects toward one of the many
options for benefiting from ADS-B

with their future Out upgrade. The
options are voluminous from a
variety of AEA member companies.

flying jets we observed simply
dropped off the display, sending the
pilot and his ride-along passenger
into an intense visual scan for the
"missing" traffic. Of course, the
planes didn't simply disappear; but
they did become invisible to our
TCAS II system as it actively pinged
our altitude for the benefit of other
so-equipped flight crew.
The experience served up a
reminder that, so far, no traffic-alert
or traffic-awareness system has
proven to be 100 percent accurate,
100 percent of the time.
For potential customers pointing
out that the limitations of TIS-B are
on occasion also suffered by TCAS
II systems isn't denigrating either
system - but providing a realistic

reminder that when operating
a machine capable of threedimensional travel there's never a
time to not pay attention - outside
and inside the cockpit.
The last target that suddenly
disappeared will likely pop back on
the screen still headed in the same
direction and at the same altitude
difference. But in the interim,
watching out the windows remains
the only available alternative to
advisory only systems with known
flaws - as well as systems approved
for making course and altitude
changes in response to alerts.
Otherwise, customers should go forth,
learn how to use their new ADS-B In
systems, and get up to speed on its
benefits and limitations. q

Final observations
On a flight returning from
November's NBAA Business
Aviation Conference and Exhibition,
sitting right seat in a light jet at
Flight Level 400 (40,000 MSL)
the multifunction displays' inset
displaying traffic from the active
TCAS II system stayed visible to
help us find traffic called out by air
traffic controllers - as well as traffic
not considered a conflict.
On that particular Friday, the
flight levels were thick with
airliners, military and general
aviation traffic.
