What should an aircraft owner do next? Go flying in
airspace where the rule requires ADS-B, then go online.
After your first flight in ADS-B coverage airspace, you can
easily check online to see whether your new equipment works
properly and complies with Federal Aviation Administration
rules. You can do this by requesting a Public ADS-B
Performance Report, or PAPR.
Visit www.faa.gov/nextgen/equipadsb and click on the
"ADS-B Out Equipped?" button to complete a form and quickly

ADS-B is the surveillance part of the FAA's NextGen effort
to modernize the U.S. air traffic system. In 2010, the FAA
published a rule mandating the use of ADS-B Out - a basic level
of aircraft equipage that transmits position data once per second
- by Jan. 1, 2020, in most airspace where a transponder is
required today. The rule specifies the type of data the equipment
must transmit to the ADS-B ground system and other properly
equipped aircraft.
If you are installing ADS-B Out equipment in an aircraft
with a standard airworthiness certificate, it must be paired with
a GPS and approved by the FAA. Experimental or light sport
aircraft owners should seek a pairing approved by the FAA, or
one deemed compliant by the avionics or aircraft manufacturer
(see FAA-approved pairings at the Equip ADS-B website listed
above under "FAA certified equipment").
ADS-B offers pilots and controllers increased safety and
better situational awareness, but it's imperative to check if your
equipment is working properly after it's installed and any time
it's serviced.
Finding and fixing issues
When installing ADS-B equipment, it's critical that repair
shop technicians correctly adjust several settings and codes.
"The most important thing for repair stations is to ensure that
the installation complies with the rule when they deliver it to
their customer," said James Marks, who leads the FAA's ADS-B
