traffic data that is every bit as good as a TCAS I for
pennies on the dollar. That's a huge benefit for the light
GA pilot."
While Walker said the traffic display capability is
obviously a big benefit for fixed-wing pilots, he believes
it will become a monumental safety advancement for
helicopter operators.
"Prior to ADS-B, the vast majority of helicopter pilots
haven't had access to an onboard traffic system - and they
can really benefit from it," he said. "TCAS installations
on helicopters are very dicey situations. Having to locate
the antenna up top, near the rotor mast, causes some
problems. Plus, the installations are expensive. ADS-B
traffic for helicopters can solve a lot of those issues at an
affordable price for all operators, which makes it a huge
safety enhancement for all operators."
While ADS-B has received the lion's share of the press,
it is only one part of the FAA's aggressive multistage
