Helping owners 'future-proof' their aircraft

Some important questions include:
* Do you frequently operate in very congested
airspace or to airports with performance-based
navigation procedures?
* Do you operate internationally? If so, to which
countries or regions?
* Do you plan to sell the aircraft in the next few
years?
"Don't be afraid to give customers options," said Mark
Wilken, vice president of avionics programs at Elliott
Aviation. "Some customers only want ADS-B Out to meet
the mandate. Others will be interested in hearing about
more equipment options available for their aircraft."

Jan. 1, 2020, ADS-B deadline approaches,
avionics shops have an opportunity to play an
important role for aircraft owners and operators - the role
of advisor, helping customers prepare for the future. Don't
just be your customers' avionics shop. Be your customers'
avionics expert and help them understand their own needs.
It's common for aircraft owners and operators to
approach avionics shops with an ADS-B solution in mind
or looking for the least expensive option. But in some
cases, a "meet-the-mandate" solution is not the best
option. While the aircraft is already out of service, what
additional equipment might benefit the aircraft owner over
the next several years? Completing multiple upgrades
while equipping an aircraft for the ADS-B mandate can
save your customer additional downtime and, in many
cases, even save labor costs by taking advantage of shop
efficiencies.
"It's important for avionics shops to educate their
customers," said Creighton Scarpone, Garmin's manager of
aftermarket sales. "How do you use the airplane today? How
will you use the airplane in the future? There might be a better
solution for your scenario than just ADS-B Out compliance."
