Once you've built friendly, supportive
relationships by visiting other shop owners and
managers, consider going another step and inviting
them to visit - and assess - your shop, according
to Hardware Retailing magazine, which serves
independent hardware and home-improvement
stores.
If you value that person's business acumen, his
honest critique of your operations provides you
with custom insight to improve your shop - even if
it's brutally honest. Indeed, fresh perspective from
a knowledgeable eye can make a big difference
in how you look at your marketing, staffing and
financials.
Furthermore, you'll have someone who
understands your shop to discuss current challenges,

future concerns, and other facets of running a bestin-class avionics shop. And you'll have a sounding
board for your ideas for improvement from a smart
operator who understands your business - and
who's willing to help. Of course, you can give back
by providing the same intelligence to them, as well.
For best results, have your guest walk your shop
floor, poke around your back office, and review
your plans and results; they should grade you on
appearance, organization, operations and other
facets of your business, then offer suggestions,
