With a simple button press, pilots get to analyze a storm
segment vertically, giving the information needed to determine
the scope of the storm.
Flight crews also may examine the angle of the cell's leading
edge to determine direction of movement, monitor the tops
of cells to see how quickly a storm is building, and easily
distinguish between ground and weather returns.
The design provides antenna stabilization to plus or minus 30
degrees of combined pitch and roll, keeping the display screen
clear of ground returns during moderate aircraft maneuvers.
Operators have a choice of a 10-inch or 12-inch antenna to fit a
wide variety of airframe applications.
Features such as a 50-percent power increase over the RDR
2000, a 320-nautical-mile range, step scans and auto tilt keep
the RDR 2100 among the top systems available.
And for RDR 2000 owners, the company offers an upgrade
to the RDR 2060 configuration, enhancing the older unit's
performance.
Garmin GWX 70: A single-package solution
with size options
Introduced in July 2012, Garmin's GWX 70 advancedtechnology digital weather radar collects real-time
precipitation intensity to provide the pilot with the tactical
weather information needed to help avoid severe weather.
An all-in-one package combines the transmitter, receiver
and antenna into a compact, lightweight package - arguably
among the most-innovative aspects of the product.
The GWX 70 boasts range capabilities out to more than
300 nautical miles, depending on the display. The package
also offers many features pioneered by, or evolved from,
products developed in years past - but with the benefit of
today's modern digital processing capabilities and improved
display options.
One useful feature is WATCH - or Weather Attenuated
Color Highlight. WATCH helps identify the shadowing
effects of short-range cell activity to highlight areas where
the weather attenuates radar signals, signals which may not
fully reflect the "storm behind the storm."
Optional features available in the GWX 70 include
Garmin's Turbulence Detection, a Doppler-enabled
function capable of identifying turbulence in air containing
particulates - precipitation, dust - at ranges up to 40 nautical
miles.
Another option: Ground Clutter Suppression. A displaysoftware upgrade option like Turbulence Detection, Ground
Clutter Suppression allows the GWX 70 to identify radar
returns from the ground and remove them from the display to
simplify analysis of returns.
Features include Altitude Compensated Tilt, a workloadreduction capability when mated to a compatible display.

This feature automates antenna tilt so that the pilot merely
needs to set desired tilt once; the radar then adjusts
automatically tilt to compensate for altitude changes.
Honeywell IntuVue RDR-4000 tops
the Honeywell pack
IntuVue RDR-4000 is Honeywell's most-advanced
weather radar system in a family of systems, and the 3-D
images display provides a complete, accurate and intuitive
view of airborne weather hazards, resulting in improved
hazard avoidance and increased safety for air-transport,
large-category business jet and military aircraft.
Honeywell's IntuVue weather radar employs 3-D
volumetric scanning and pulse compression technologies to
provide a complete view of the weather from 0 to 60,000 feet
across a 320 nautical-mile detection range. IntuVue's weather
analysis tools help pilots better understand weather hazards
and calculate the best strategic and tactical responses.
The unique display capability combines both weather
and terrain data to provide a more intuitive horizontal and
virtual view of upcoming weather dynamics - reducing or
eliminating unnecessary route deviations.
Rockwell Collins RTA-4100 MultiScan:
The top product from the company that
pioneered airborne weather radar
It's been more than 60 years since Rockwell Collins
unveiled its first airborne weather radar system; more than
35 since the company launched the first solid-state airborne
weather radar, an air-transport product. Seven years later,
Rockwell Collins brought solid-state airborne weather radar
to corporate aviation.
Since 1987, the company has advanced multiscan radar
and features such as auto-tilt, automatic ground-clutter
suppression, and geographic referencing.
In the 21st century, Rockwell Collins focused on
developing its multiscan systems. The RTA-4100 MultiScan
Weather Radar provides flight crews with comprehensive
weather analysis and threat detection at ranges out to 320
nautical miles. The "clutter-free" weather display helps
enhance effectiveness as a threat detector with capabilities
such as MultiScan automatic operation, Geographic Weather
Correlation, OverFlight protection and turbulence detection.
The RTA-4100 accurately depicts weather and weatherrelated hazard events at any location around the globe.
This capability gives flight crews a more-accurate
depiction of weather and turbulence hazards that significantly
reduces flight deck workload and training for pilots. The
RTA-4100 MultiScan radar supports integration of new
