"It allows aviation enthusiasts to benefit from an easy
installation and retrofit solution in one complete box,"
Belleux said. "You'll be totally integrated into the digital
search and rescue services systems provided today by the new
MEOSAR (medium-altitude earth orbit search and rescue)
satellites and, of course, current generation of
satellites."
The field of search and rescue is
in transition, according to Belleux.
"Our field is dynamic these
days," he said. "After the crash of
AF447 and MH370, the Global
Aeronautical Distress Safety
System initiative from ICAO is
redefining the expectations for
aircraft in emergency situations.
New recommendations are written,
new systems are designed, and new
equipment will be provided in the coming
few years onboard commercial aircraft.
At the same time, the new MEOSAR satellite
constellation just entered into early operational
capability in December 2016. The new system will provide
extensive coverage of the world, helping search and rescue
teams significantly improve speed and precision. On the
other hand, Galileo satellites have proposed a new service
with the Return Link Service where the next-generation
beacons will not only transmit, but will also be able to
receive a message from the search and rescue organization

Belleux credits McMurdo's employees and research and
development department for helping the company stay at
the forefront of search and rescue technology and shaping
standards in industry working groups.
"We participate in RTCA, EUROCAE and CospasSarsat expert working groups, for example, helping
to define the future of the emergency system after the
crash of AF447 and MH370," said Belleux, who
has served on several special committees,
including as chairman of EUROCAE
WG 74. "We also participated in
the technology demonstration
of the Galileo system early
on. McMurdo also is driving
various safety initiatives as part
of the European Commission's
HELIOS project, which
is tasked with developing
innovative, new solutions such
as next-generation aircraft
emergency beacons to enhance
safety in our skies.
