WARRANTY CHECKS AND BALANCES

"Getting warranty registration is like pulling teeth," said Tom
Harper, Avidyne marketing director. Throughout the years, the
company has tried different enticements to get dealers and customers
to register their warranties. "Most avionics have a two-year warranty.
With our IFD, we tried something different; it had to be registered
to get the second year. We also tried a DVD of the pilot guide with
delivery, and if we received the warranty registration, we'd send a
color-printed guide. That didn't move the needle either. People wanted
the printed guide on delivery."
Avidyne also offers extended warranties, but the unit must be
registered to qualify for them. If the unit is out of warranty, owners
can still take advantage of the extension, but as the penalty clause
pointed out, it will cost more. So far, none of the enticement
programs has been overtly successful, Harper noted. "But that doesn't
mean we've thrown up our hands and surrendered. We're looking for
the right carrot, because you never want to use a stick with shops that
are buying your product."
BendixKing dealers are supposed to register the warranties because
they have the pertinent information at their fingertips. "We do sell
some equipment over the counter, and in that situation, the end user is
expected to provide the warranty information," said Roger Dykmann,
BendixKing vice president of marketing and product management.
When authorized BendixKing dealers install equipment, they are
supposed to register the warranties because they have the required
information and serial numbers.
Like all manufacturers, BendixKing is always looking for ways to
make the registration process easier. "Since almost everyone has a
smartphone now, can we put a barcode on the unit or its display so
they can register it with a photo?" Dykmann pondered, comparing
it to a bank's check deposit via photo. For equipment driven by a
database, like the KSN 770, BendixKing offers owners one free
database update, but the 770 must be registered to get it.
Each manufacturer has some unique registration requirements.
"Either the shop or the customer may register," said Lee Moore,
Garmin director of aviation product support. "The owner can
complete a product registration for notifications, but it does not
count toward the warranty date. The dealer must register online for
warranty consideration."
BendixKing essentially has two warranty clocks that start ticking
when it ships units to dealers. The first clock is a "warranty delay,"
Dykmann said. Without going into details about all the variables
involved, it runs for six to 18 months. If the unit isn't registered
