eorge Massey isn't keen on retiring. At 84, he
still oversees Hitek, the business he started
21 years ago with the help of his late wife,
Christene. Located 14 miles north of Wichita, Kansas, the
six-person company manufactures proprietary electronic and
electrical products for a variety of applications, including
airborne, ground support and aircraft maintenance equipment
for general aviation.
"We just sort of puttered
along, responding to queries
from a customer base that
has grown organically over
the years," Massey said.
"Some of our customers came
from our previous endeavor,
owning Electrodelta Inc. in White Oak, Texas, a major player
in general aviation and military aircraft and tactical vehicle
and UAV electric systems. Today, it is part of Hartzell. After
selling Electrodelta, we moved to Kansas, our home state, to
retire - at least we thought we were going to retire."
Massey, who flies a Van's Aircraft RV-8 and has a
bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Wichita
University, has 60 years of experience as an electronics
technician. His sense of humor comes through in every

"My title is electrical systems guru, granted by the Hitek
board of directors after much urging from me," he said. "Of
course, I'm the sole member."
Expanding space, markets
Hitek's small facility on the private Hight Point Airport
in Valley Center isn't large enough to keep pace with the
company's increasing sales and anticipated growth. Massey
purchased the former B&D

of renovating the space so he can
expand his operations into the

manufacture all of Hitek's products in the 13,000-square-foot
space. From starters and generators to battery accessories and
electrostatic spray systems and more, Hitek's products support
turbine- and piston-powered aircraft.
"The new space will be adequate for some time," he said.
"The previous occupant, B&D Instruments, an AEA member,
had 50 employees. We have six."

aviation markets, including aircraft OEMs, high-performance
