I just call 'em
as I see 'em!

arlier this year, a good friend passed away far too
early in life. In the weeks after his death, I attended
a Federal Aviation Administration forum on repair
station safety where the FAA's revised advisory circular on
human factors training (AC 120-72A: Maintenance Human
Factors Training) was briefed. The irony was how the two were
interrelated.
If you knew my friend, and many Avionics News readers
do, you know my friend will likely haunt me from his grave
for mentioning anything positive about human factors and his
memory in the same paragraph. But I just call 'em as I see
'em!
I'm not overly fond of the AC; it isn't much more than a
library reference of third-party resources, many written by the
author of the AC. As stated, the AC provides "descriptions
of references and training materials to ensure that the reader
can assemble a maintenance human factors training program
matched to the applicable needs of their specific organization."
Nonetheless, it highlights those areas of life where being
human and having human traits can affect both your
performance on the job and, as my friend showed us, your
performance in life, as well.
How many times have we had someone tell us to see a
doctor, pay more attention to our driving, eat better, exercise
more, or work fewer hours? After a while, we label them as a
nag and dismiss their comments. Or how many times do we
refrain from commenting because we don't want to be labeled
as a nag, complainer or meddler?

For international readers, the Oxford dictionary defines nag
as verb with a meaning to "harass (someone) constantly to do
something that they are averse to."
When we look at the human factors' dirty dozen - those 12
common things that can affect maintenance - we see many
commonalities to life in general. The human factors' dirty
dozen are as follows:
*	
Lack of communication.
*	Complacency.
*	
Lack of knowledge.
*	Distraction.
*	
Lack of teamwork.
*	Fatigue.
*	
Lack of resources.
*	Pressure.
*	
Lack of assertiveness.
*	Stress.
*	
Lack of awareness.
*	Norms.
When our family or friends mention our shortcomings (their
nagging), they might be pointing out our complacency, lack
of knowledge, fatigue, pressures and stresses. Or perhaps we
have been doing things this way for so long that it is now a
norm and we don't notice our contrary actions any longer. Or
maybe when the messenger has been beaten up for nagging
so much they back off and become victims of a lack of
communication, complacency and assertiveness. In life as well
as at the avionics shop, both the nagging and the nagger have
