traffic control center's voice capabilities. Once I got on
the right frequency, I was greeted with, "OK, I see you
down there; radar contact." Yes, it's absolutely possible a
Mode C transponder would have performed as well, but
the Gulf has excellent ADS-B coverage, including where
land-based ATC radar simply can't see.
Latest and greatest
And then there's the new equipment factor. Many pilots
have encountered transponder problems in their career.
Maybe the device decides to squawk a code different
from the one displayed. Maybe it's continually identing.
Or the altitude it's reporting to ATC is inaccurate. Or - as
once happened to me - its responses to ATC interrogation
somehow had drifted so far out of specification the
controller requested I turn it off and handled my airplane
as a primary target for the rest of that flight. After an
en route fuel stop, the transponder seemed fine, and it
performed as-advertised on subsequent flights.
Sure, anything can go wrong with anything at any
time. Inevitably, there will come a day when my spiffy
new ADS-B Out transponder falls down. But there's
the somewhat intangible and hard-to-quantify peace of
mind from installing new equipment and knowing the
law of averages tells me that day probably is far in the
future. And there's even more peace of mind gained by
knowing my airplane now sports the latest and greatest
surveillance equipment specification available, and it
easily can be identified by ATC while continuing to
access the airspace where it will be required.
Finally, there's also the impact an ADS-B Out
installation can have on resale value. It's no secret the
used aircraft market is a barometer of how pilots want
their airplanes equipped. My own informal, unscientific
research indicates a high-performance, go-places airplane
with ADS-B Out already installed can be worth thousands
more than an identical one lacking the equipment.
That pricing seems to reflect at least the future cost
of installing ADS-B Out, perhaps plus a premium
acknowledging the seller has already done something the
buyer would have to do soon, anyway.
Hard-wired equipment
Before my airplane's ADS-B Out installation, like
thousands of other pilots, I availed myself of ADS-B In's
free traffic and weather data. Throughout the years, I used
a variety of receivers and two different consumer-grade

tablets - one an iOS device and the other using Android
- for displaying the data. This meant I had at least two
portable devices whose batteries I needed to manage
before they could support a full day's flying, or put up
with a tangle of power cords and adapters in the cockpit.
Most of that went away with the ADS-B Out solution I
chose.
One reason, of course, is the NGT-9000 also provides
ADS-B In reception, just like many other ADS-B Out
installations. So, right away, I'm eliminating a portable
receiver, plus its power cord and antenna, if any. And
thanks to the L3 device's touchscreen panel, which
can display both traffic and weather information, I also
could eliminate my tablet-based EFB and its power
requirements. (I don't because I use the tablet to display
charts and perform other cockpit chores.)
These days, I'm down to only one portable device in
the cockpit, an iPad, using only one power cord to keep
it fully charged. That simplifies my life as well as my
cockpit routines. For example, I no longer need to mount
a portable ADS-B In receiver and check its battery before
takeoff, or move it to a charger at the end of the day when
the flying is finished. All those chores are done for me by
the installed, hard-wired equipment, which powers on with
the avionics bus and links to the iPad without intervention.
The last word
If you've been reading between the lines, by now you
know I'm happy with my decision to equip with ADS-B
Out well in advance of the 2020 deadline. It's done, and I
won't incur the downtime or expense again. Meanwhile,
I'm seeing the benefits every day, and my airplane's
market value has increased.
There are both tangible and intangible benefits to
ADS-B Out, and the extent to which your airplane can be
made to incorporate them are almost unlimited. The only
real constraints involve financial considerations and what
you and your avionics shop reasonably can install and
make perform as you want. Meanwhile, flying an airplane
with an ADS-B Out installation that includes ADS-B
In's traffic and weather information makes the enhanced
situational awareness these tools provide as seamless and
simple as it can be. My installation doesn't even include
a number of the more advanced capabilities many owners
are adding to their aircraft.
Living with ADS-B is far from a burden. The
technology works well, the benefits are real, and there's
enormous peace of mind from having done the upgrade
well in advance of the deadline. That's my story, and I'm
sticking to it. q
