International Convention & Trade Show, the
largest gathering of avionics manufacturers,
distributors and government-certified repair
stations in the world. The celebration?
This year's event in the Ernest N. Morial
Convention Center, March 13 through 16,
came as the association marks its founding
60 years ago in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In
fact, 1,604 industry professionals attended
the four-day convention, which featured
a festive First-Nighter Party modeled on
Mardi Gras, including a parade and two
authentic floats.
Opening ceremonies
It had been all-business earlier on
that opening day, when David Loso, the
AEA's chairman of the board, led off
the convention's opening ceremony by
welcoming attendees, and especially firsttimers. Remarking on the AEA's 60th
year, he related how the association's staff
retrieved an original, typewritten copy
of minutes from the initial organizing
meetings. Based on that record, Loso
reminded attendees that one of the biggest
challenges facing the industry in 1957 -
transitioning technology - offers lessons
for 2017. When the AEA was formed,
one of the challenges was finding ways to
install 90-channel VHF transceivers and
monochrome weather radar.
"Today, it's a transition from analog
to digital, from terrestrial to satellite
sources, and the interfacing technology
of the next-generation air transportation
system," Loso said.
Referring to those long-ago formative
meetings, he related how the association's
founders set three goals: "To promote
better relations between the shops; to
promote better service and installations for
their customers; and to promote further
exchange of ideas. Clearly, what our
industry needed in 1957 from the AEA
is still needed today." Since then, Loso
