Member of the Year, while Appareo
was honored as the AEA Associate
Member of the Year.
Vail is avionics sales manager
at the Flightstar FBO, based at the
University of Illinois-Willard Airport.
With more than 36 years of experience
in the general aviation industry, he
has been a longtime member of the
AEA and has generously donated
substantial amounts of time as a
volunteer participant in many of its
activities.
For example, he served on the
association's Strategic Planning
Committee before being elected
to the board of directors in 2005.
He also served as chairman of the
Government Affairs and Regulatory
Committee and spearheaded the
AEA's Ambassador Program,
promoting better communications
between member companies and the
Federal Aviation Administration's
Flight Standards District Offices. A
former vice chairman of the AEA
board of directors, Vail was elected its
chairman in 2010 and served in that
role until 2013.
In addition to Vail, nominees for the
2017 AEA Member of the Year Award
included Don Dominguez of San Luis
Avionics Inc.; Chuck Gallagher of
Cincinnati Avionics; Bob Marryat of
Q.F. Avionics Center Ltd.; and Rick
Peavley of Sun Aviation Avionics.
The 2017 AEA Associate Member
of the Year, meanwhile, is Appareo,
a company founded 13 years ago and
with its roots firmly in the agricultural
industry's electronics market.
Since then, Appareo has quickly
become a recognized leader in the
engineering and manufacture of lowcost innovative avionics solutions,
particularly flight data recorders.
