Flightcell
New Zealand-based Flightcell International offers airborne integrated-mobile communications, providing satellite
and cellular data, voice and tracking to private, commercial
and military aircraft worldwide. The company got its start
in 1995, when pilot John Wyllie, now the president and
CEO, developed one of the first cellphone-to-headset interfaces, easing in-flight cellular telephone use. At the 2017
AEA Convention, Hamish Neill,
Flightcell's vice
president, introduced the company's latest product,
Flightcell DZMx,
an all-in-one Iridium
satellite and cellular
solution for voice, data
and aircraft tracking.
According to Flightcell, its
Flightcell's DZMx
DZMx is the only system that offers
uninterrupted GPS tracking via satellite and cellular networks, significantly reducing the cost of
communications. The system is unlocked, meaning operators
are free to choose their tracking and airtime providers, and a
new feature - cellular IP tracking - avoids using potentially
expensive SMS messaging. The DZMx's tracking function
is accomplished via a user-configurable, event-driven logic,
potentially saving even greater expense, and is uninterrupted,
even when the system is being used for a traditional cellular
telephone call.
Other features include Iridium telephone integration
when used with a Flightcell cradle, installation of a remotecontrol head, allowing full utilization of the unit from as
many as two additional crew positions, and an Ethernet/
USB hub, providing connections for a Wi-Fi router or by
cabling directly to a personal computer, tablet or other
onboard system. The hub also is used to facilitate firmware
upgrades and data downloads.
In addition to Iridium connectivity, the DZMx offers
4G/LTE/3G cellular capability and supports night-vision
goggles. An ARINC 429 expansion card is available.
Back-panel configurations can include a single D38999
circular connector for military applications or dual DB-25s.
Mounting options include Dzus rail (5.5 inch) and conventional instrument panel avionics rack (6.25 inch).

Garmin's G1000 NXi

Garmin
First deliveries of Garmin's G1000 integrated flight deck
began in June 2004. Since the initial product, the all-glass
flight instrument and moving map system has seen numerous upgrades and revisions throughout the years. But none
of them compare to the company's latest offering, which
it considers the G1000's whole-new successor: the G1000
NXi. Leveraging the myriad technological advances since
2004, the G1000 NXi incorporates dual-core processors for
the first time, tying them to brighter, smoother, high-resolution displays. That translates into crisper map rendering
and smoother panning, plus faster system initialization. The
new hardware also incorporates "contemporary animations,
modernized design for improved readability and new LED
back-lighting," according to the company.
Given the emergence of ADS-B since the original
G1000, it's natural the G1000 NXi incorporates and
accommodates the technology. Exclusive ADS-B traffic
features include Garmin's patented TargetTrend for judging
target trajectories and closure rates, and TerminalTraffic,
which displays a comprehensive picture of ADS-Bequipped aircraft and ground vehicles. The G1000 NXi
also leverages Garmin's existing Connext wireless cockpit connectivity, including two-way flight plan transfer
between the panel and a portable device running the
Garmin Pilot app, plus sharing of traffic, weather and GPS
information - among others - with compatible mobile
devices.
For new installations, Garmin estimates the G1000 NXi
can save 250 pounds in King Air aircraft, thanks in part to
a new, fully integrated and lightweight air data and attitude
heading reference system. King Air owners and operators
with an existing G1000 integrated flight deck can easily
upgrade to the G1000 NXi with minimal aircraft downtime
and disruption of the panel as the displays are pin-to-pin
compatible.
