When Flamingo Air purchased Airline Ground Schools,
Dave MacDonald, Flamingo Air's president asked, "How
can we deliver this program online to make it worldwide?"
He wanted to make it much more than it was. Sharon
McGee, Academy president and MacDonald's spouse, had
the answer. She developed an online program and got it
approved by the FAA to deliver 152 of 200 hours online for
aircraft dispatch. Students must spend the last six days on
campus. Once it was launched, students earned an average
96 percent pass rate on their first attempt.
The convenience of the program, along with the high success rate, caused good news to spread. Now, students from
all over the world participate. Airline Ground Schools educates students from as far away as Rwanda, Saudi Arabia,
Japan and China.
"We had one of the local community colleges come to us
about avionics," MacDonald said. Airline Ground Schools
took over the avionics program from the community college and designed a system to deliver the theory subjects
online. After completion of the online portion of the course,
students travel to campus for two to three weeks to get the
AET. "It beats a 15-month program," MacDonald added.
Like the aircraft dispatcher course, the AET lessons are
based on the cloud. Hands-on education is completed using
simulators.
In March, Flamingo Air announced it is working with the

United States Forest Service to aid in recruiting AETs to
work for the agency.
"The United States Forest Service currently has a significant need for AETs with an FCC GROL endorsement
certificate," MacDonald said. "Not only does Airline Ground
Schools offer avionics training courses, we help place professionals with the proper certifications in this growing field."
To earn an AET, students must enroll in two courses,
each starting at under $3,000. The students can continue by
taking five more courses covering the AET endorsements.
Finally, an additional course is available for those aspiring
to earn the GROL endorsement. The classes began during
the fall of 2016, and the laboratory work began in January
of this year. New classes start every other month. Students
can register for courses and placement services via the company's website.
Flamingo Air is accredited by NCATT and ASTM International. In addition, it is certificated under Parts 61, 65, 91,
135, 141 and 145.
The common threads of success are working for Flamingo Air. The company has expanded its educational
capabilities with the purchase of Airline Ground Schools.
Airline Ground Schools developed an innovative cloudbased method of delivering instruction at a distance. Finally,
teaming with the U.S. Forest Service will allow graduates to
move quickly into a well-paying avionics job. q
