hat better test of an autopilot system
than a late-morning flight about 1,500
feet above the super-heated landscape of
south-central Kansas. Ripe with hot southerly winds
and resplendent with the bumps and bubbles of rising
air, the airspace northeast of Wichita, Kansas, treats like
rag dolls the occupants of light aircraft - such as the
archetype Cessna 172 Skyhawk in which we fly.
But the pilot and co-pilot suffer not from the
workload of flying straight, level, on a heading and at
altitude, thanks to the first retrofit autopilot systems to
emerge from the fertile minds of engineers at Garmin.

A week after that sample flight - and six days before
the opening day of AirVenture 2017 in Oshkosh,
Wisconsin - Garmin announced two models, both close
cousins to the GFC 700 digital autopilot long furnished
by aircraft makers as OEM equipment in a host of
aircraft.
Garmin's new digital GFC 500 autopilot also brings
a bonus to aircraft owners who embrace Garmin's
slick new compact G5 primary flight display, since the
company designed the new flight-control systems to
function seamlessly with the increasingly functional G5
PFD.
With both autopilot models, the
certificated-aircraft community once
again gains benefits from equipment
originally designed and marketed for
aircraft other than type-certificated
hardware. And this flight-control system
may have some pilots feeling like they're
flying with a G1000 system, given the
many GFC 700 functions Garmin carried
over to these two new retrofit autopilots.
