Garmin's GFC 600 and GFC 500 flight-control packages
both incorporate a number of safety-enhancing
technologies designed to help pilots return to controlled
flight in the event of an inadvertent departure from
controlled flight - or excess bank angles in turns.

For the light-piston single-engine crowd, Garmin
now offers the GFC 500 autopilot, which uniquely
integrates with the required G5 electronic flight
instrument to deliver a high-functioning package.
For those who haven't yet moved to the digital,
solid-state G5 PFD, the GFC 500 package with the
required G5 costs, exclusive of installation, under
$10,000.
Operators already equipped with a G5 get a break at
Garmin's quoted price of $6,995 for the GFC 500. An
installation using two G5s - one as a PFD, the other as
a directional gyro - deliver even greater functionality
from the GFC 500.
For operators of higher-performing piston singles,
twins and light
turboprops, Garmin
designed and STC'd the
step-up second system,
the GFC 600. Prices
start at $19,995 for the
version STC'd for the
A36 Bonanza. A version
STC'd for the B55 Baron
retails for $24,995.
Both prices exclude
installation costs.
Low prices aside, neither is a bare-bones, bargainbasement system, given their advanced features
and capabilities. For example, the GFC 600 can be
configured to deliver specialized functions tailored
to the powerplant and systems, such as a go-around
button.
Both systems perform comparably with Garmin's
sophisticated, full-function OEM GFC 700 digital
flight-control system, the standard autopilot integrated
into thousands of G1000 and G1000 NXi integrated

avionics packages. And that means operators who
opt for either the GFC 500 or GFC 600 should look
forward to a high level of functionality - and a high
degree of sophistication.
Among the cutting-edge features of both autopilots
are safety-enhancing ones introduced in the GFC 700
but not always available on certificated autopilots -
particularly those for light singles.
Two feature-rich flight-control packages
Garmin contributed to the migration of safetyenhancing gear used in light sport and certificated
aircraft with its introduction of the G5; the company's
G3X system is a popular glass cockpit option among

the light sport and experimental set.
Technologies from both come together to give the
GFC 500, in particular, and GFC 600 their capabilities.
That's right: An autopilot for light singles priced as low
as under $7,000 - but with features and capabilities
only seen in LSA and experimental, amateur-built
flight-control systems and, alternately, in high-end
systems found in jets and business-turboprop aircraft.
