As part of their senior class project, SIU
students, work together in small groups
to design, build and install an avionics
installation of com/nav, transponder,
audio panel, instruments and GPS.

as a Bachelor of Science in aviation technologies.
The program averages 30 to 40 students yearly with a
strong attendance of prior military personnel. Our classes
typically have 10- to 20-percent international students from
more than 20 different countries enrolled at various times.
Avionics News: How has enrollment changed during
the past five years?
Mitchell: The aviation
technologies program has seen
a sharp increase in enrollment in
the past five years. We recently
completed a program with Saudi
Aramco, the large oil and gas producer, to train aircraft and
avionics technicians. The program averaged 10 students a year
with about one-third enrolled in the avionics degree training.
During the last two years, our enrollment has declined,
partially due to the completion of the Aramco contract and a
reduction in overall enrollment from regional students.
Avionics News: Where do you see your program in
five years?
Mitchell: Currently, we are working with local
community colleges with computer and electronics systems
degrees and regional A&P schools to offer articulation
agreements and developing a pathway for students to continue
their education and earn a bachelor's degree in aviation
technologies with avionics specialization and an optional
minor in logistics.
We have also developed a new online bachelor's degree
in aviation technologies with
a specialization in aircraft
maintenance management. This
new program is designed for
people who are in the workforce
and looking to upgrade their
education to remain competitive as the current generation of
babyboomers retires.
Because this degree is tailored toward working individuals,
those who currently hold an airframe and powerplant
mechanic's certificate, or have completed an associate degree
in aircraft electronics or can demonstrate equivalent civilian or
military experience, can earn college credit for work experience.
This enables qualified students to complete the 10 required
