online courses and earn a degree in as little as a year's time. And
they never miss a day of work. In many cases, their employer
will help with the program's cost.
In addition, we continue to have a strong interest
from international students. We recently completed an
agreement with Saudi Arabia Airlines for avionics training
for its aircraft maintainers. In May, we signed a 2+2
Agreement with Shenyang Aerospace University, which
will start in 2020. The academic concentrations will be on
avionics maintenance with a goal to recruit 150 students
a year in China. They will do their first two years over
there and then come here for the last two years. Students
who stay in China will receive the Shenyang Aerospace
University degree, and those who come here to SIU
Carbondale for training will receive a bachelor's degree in
aviation technologies with a specialization in avionics.
I, along with other instructors, will be going to China
to do some of the specialized training. It's an exciting
opportunity.

Avionics News: How are you preparing students to
become technicians and satisfying the increasing demand
of these advanced technology fields in avionics, unmanned
aircraft systems and aircraft electronics?
Mitchell: We have an active curriculum advisory
broad made up of alumni and non-alums from across
the aviation industry who meet annually advising us on
methods and technologies. Our avionics students don't have
to obtain an A&P license; however, 98 percent of them do.
Our avionics students specialize in both circuit level
and systems operation and repairs. We have strong
analog and digital systems courses with a new addition of
programing languages and networking. We have an EFIS
data bus course using ARINC binary code and systems
operations found on general aviation, corporate and air
transport aircraft.

As part of our senior class project, students in small
groups work together to design, build and install an
avionics installation of com/nav, transponder, audio
panel, instruments and GPS. Our flight management
course teaches students to operate/fly FMS on computer
simulators from the Garmin GNS 430 to the G1000 and
the Rockwell Collins CDU-4500 FMS.
Students perform a system operation checkout using the
Avidyne IFD540 system. All avionics students obtain their
FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License plus ship
radar endorsement.
Our students also get considerable hands-on experience
here. We are lucky to have a wide array of aircraft
including a Boeing 737, Gulfstream GIII, and Learjet 21,
along with Cessna and Piper singles and twins.

Avionics News: How are you doing things
differently to keep up with technological advancements?
What is new and exciting in your curriculum?
Mitchell: On the advice of our curriculum advisory
board members, we added training with Raspberry Pi
computers and build circuits and programing systems to
operate various aircraft and avionics systems.
Students also get experience with component design
and development and use a 3-D printer to prototype
system components. They also learn to navigate and
fly FMS systems on computers to better understand the
operation and function of the systems. We just added a
new drone certification course and FAA knowledge test
course to our avionics curriculum.
The drone program is actually offered in two
curriculums. One is a two-week program created for
non-aviation industries like agriculture, real estate,
communications and the like. It teaches the basics,
including pilot in command rules and regulations,
enabling students for UAV drone certification and the FAA
knowledge test.
The second branch of study is a 16-week program
geared toward our regular aviation program students. It
