Upping their game
How to coach your employees toward continuous improvements

C

onsider the coach.
Most likely, a sport comes to mind. Whether
that's one you've played or one you follow with
fervor, you'll recognize that the coach strives to condition,
train and motivate a team to reach its potential both in
practice and in competition. Some win championships. Most
won't. Yet all the good ones leave a mark on their players.
This comes to mind lately for two reasons. First, the
recent passing of a standout coach and educator I knew years
ago, whose lessons on leadership I still think about often.
Second, the idea of coaching - and the performance it can
inspire - has expanded beyond the playing field to touch the
workplace.
If you look around your avionics or instrument shop,
you'll see a team that has its successes today but needs to
incrementally improve to meet the challenges of tomorrow.
Whether that's knowledge development, process tweaks or
growth opportunities, they need guidance. In fact, what they
need is a coach. You.
Workplace coaching has never been more important,
according to Ron Cacioppe of leadership and management
consultancy Integral Development. As a process, it helps you
turn on-the-job and classroom lessons into new, long-term
work behavior, and that results in measurable benefits.
But it requires you to understand how you might fulfill this
role. By recognizing what coaches do, why it's important,
and how you can use a model to create the conversations
that move your people forward, you'll appreciate the reason

for the investment in your time and energy. Mostly, though,
you'll see that if you want your people to up their game, you
must help them learn how to win.
Growing performance
Coaching is a process of guiding employees toward being
more competent, skillful players on your team, and it involves
helping them gain the abilities, knowledge and experience
to consistently improve during their tenure with you. It's not
only beneficial for the worker, but it also serves your shop.
In both cases, coaching also drives the idea of continuous
improvement, which, as a business concept, involves ongoing
effort to create and sustain positive change. Put another way,
you're trying to help your employees get better at their jobs
so your shop runs smarter, too.
For that reason, employee coaching is an important
leadership tool. But it's also distinct, both in intent and
practice, from other management techniques. Coaching uses
the experience of a supervisor to help employees develop
new best practices, which makes it different from counseling.
This guides employees through workplace or personal issues,
or from direct management, which uses top-down directives
to push employees toward improved performance - or even
from training or mentoring.
A coaching conversation wouldn't provide such guidance
as, "This is what you did wrong on that project, here's how
you should do it right," according to Renée Robertson, a
business coach and author of The Coaching Solution: How
