REALITY. Next, have your employee describe what
reality looks like now; that is, where is she now compared to
where she wants to go, according to The Success Institute.
By working through this step, she can start to develop ways
to solve for her goals and identify themes that keep her
from progressing. To help her, ask what is happening now,
what she'd like to happen, why this is a problem, what's
going well, what key obstacles prevent change, and so forth,
according to YourCoach. By giving her a place to start, she
can focus on tomorrow, not yesterday.
OPTIONS. Help your employee think through different
tactics for improvement. Brainstorm ideas, and let your
employee offer his ideas before you offer yours. Evaluate
each, nudge him in the right direction, and let him make
the decisions on how to move forward. To prime the
conversation, ask such questions as what he's already doing
to work toward his goal, what he's learning from that,
what other options he sees and their pros and cons, how he

weighs those evaluations, what he would do if he faced no
constraints, and the like, according to YourCoach. This helps
him find a solution he can commit to.
WAY FORWARD. Whatever decision your employee
envisions, it's necessary for her to embrace a concrete plan of
action that will help her achieve her goal, as well as a way to
execute it, so she stays on task. Work with her to identify how
this plan will help her achieve her goal, what she's going to
- and when - how she'll overcome obstacles, and how she'll
stay motivated, according to The Success Institute. Then
address when and how she'll get feedback - whether that's
daily, weekly or monthly - so she stays true to her timeline.
This gives her a process to pursue.
Each of your staff members will have individual
improvements they need to make to move toward a smarter
future, and the goal of coaching is to help them identify and
solve them. When it's done with intent and attention, you'll
help guide them through all the small steps along the way.
You might not win a trophy, but you will see improvements
worth cheering. q
