Facebook, and legalizing pot. Two more problems are cellphones and marijuana. The
latter is a problem, but not one we can do much about. Marijuana may be legal in
some states, but it's not legal for the Federal Aviation Administration. Even in states
where it's not legal, it significantly limits our hiring pool. When we advertise for a
position, we identify it as "pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing."
This is reiterated during the interview process. We still have a high amount of preemployment failures. The excuse is typically "I don't do it a lot" or "I didn't think
I would test positive." I have no idea how or why this thought process came to be,
but it's getting worse.
Finally, there's cellphones. Believe it or not, we just fired a technician over
cellphone use. Most of my technicians use their phones as tools in the workplace.
They're valuable efficiency tools if used properly. Unfortunately, this one was glued
to it. We would literally catch him motionless, with a soldering iron in one hand,
wire in the other, gazing at his phone on the table for minutes on end watching text
messages from his wife. After talking to him about it several times (with no change
in behavior), we banned his cellphone from the premises. Two weeks later, we found
him covertly receiving text messages while working on a project. It was like watching someone with a bad gambling habit keep coming back to the table. Enough was
enough, and we made the decision to terminate him. In true millennial fashion, he
decided it wasn't his fault.
So, where have all the technicians gone? Yes, we've lost some to age. Many of
the others we've lost to everyone gets a trophy, what's a wrench, and wanna smoke
some pot? Those who remain haven't even thought about aviation, and here's why:
Growing up, I remember my parents always saying things like "You should
become a doctor or lawyer," or simply urging me to become an engineer or take
another desk job. I get it. They want the best for me, and those were the peak professions when I was a kid. Now there's a law office or medical practice on what
seems like every street corner, but there's no one to turn a wrench. Looks like my
parents' friends recommended the same professions to their kids, as well. So, what
now? In the next five to 10 years, we're going to see a reversal. The medical, legal
and similar industry professions are going to be inundated, while pure demand for
skilled, higher-level maintenance technicians is going to go through the roof. With
that comes an increase in technician salaries, and most importantly, our labor rates.
Many talented kids don't want or can't afford to go to college. Avionics is a great
career in which one can make a decent living without a degree. They just don't
know about this industry. It's time to start heading out to high schools and talking
to students. Career days, EAA Young Eagles events and other similar programs can
be a great introduction for these students. They all know about pilots. Some know
about mechanics, but almost none know about avionics technicians or our industry
as a whole. We as individuals, shops and an industry must make an effort to show
today's youth the wonder and intrigue of avionics. The key is picking the right kids
to ensure our industry's future and opening their eyes to our world. q
