Pilots may recognize a
passenger in the above list of
music-influenced fauna, mineral
and flora. Music piped through
the audio panel to the headphones
of passengers stands among the
most-commonly used options for
providing in-flight entertainment in
general aviation aircraft.
Starting back a couple of decades,
makers of audio-control panels
began offering technologies to pipe
audio through aircraft audio-control
panels other than VHF radio traffic.
These options succeeded the earliest source of in-flight
audio of non-flight-related programs, the trusty old automatic
direction finder tuned to an AM radio station. Many flight
crews filled their quiet hours with sports, drama or levity
listening to the high-power, clear-channel AM stations dating
back to the beginning of the non-directional beacon as a
navigation tool.
Thankfully, the state of the art advanced significantly
in the past 30 years. Today's modern audio-control panels
often offer multiple ways to channel music to the headsets of
passengers and crew.
Bluetooth wireless connections allow occupants to feed
music to others via the audio panel; compact-disc players
offer another alternative for entertaining the passengers with
sounds, from soothingly symphonic to head-banging heavy
metal.
Beyond a wireless connection, many audio-panel options
offer slots for direct playing of tunes from flash drives, those
tiny keychain-size storage devices also known as a USB

The great director must have been enlightened by flying
in light aircraft - ones without a lavatory - where the length
of the longest leg flown is dictated by the capacity of the
smallest bladder.
Movies in-flight are still a relatively new, albeit growing,
element of travel by light general-aviation aircraft. Options
range from the simple, personal approach - a tablet loaded
with movies to play - to compact-video disc players showing
their motion pictures on integral display screens.
The latter approach requires more cabin space than
available in most Part 23 aircraft. But for larger Part 25
aircraft, a number of solutions exist, including live satellite
