According to multiple researchers
across several studies, simple toys often
do the best job of holding the attention
of the younger set - thinking prekindergarten to fifth grade here - and
even older "kids" approaching old age.
Travel experts advise parents to bring
along a favorite blanket, stuffed animal
or other soft toy - particularly for the
younger travelers.
These "plush" toys provide a sense of
security in what otherwise might be an
insecure feeling on the part of a youngster
- especially young ones making their first
flight or their first in a long time.
So stuff "Teddy" into a conveniently
accessible bag or briefcase and bring
him along for the flight.
Research shows toys that engage
hands and brains do the best at
occupying the minds of youngsters
with otherwise short attention spans.
Think Play-Doh, Legos or a game with
magnetic pieces to hold them to a metal
playing board.
With these toys, they can keep
themselves entertained by making PlayDoh animals, building Lego aircraft
and more. And if worried about losing
the dice in the foreign-object-sensitive
interior of a light plane, consider
downloading one of the many apps
created to simulate the rolling of the
bones - complete with the ability to
change the color of each die.
A quick Google search turns up
many, written for both Android and
iOS devices. And then there are books
- books today conveniently available
for download onto sundry tablets,
notebooks, e-readers and smartphones
of all types.
The benefit of this approach includes
being able to satisfy a sudden whim or
failure to plan ahead - particularly if the
aircraft sports an internet connection
capable of downloading the book or, for
that matter, movie to the player. q
