and oversee someone new, the value of
growing your own employee is undeniable
when it produces the tenured technician
who is truly invested in your business and
appreciative of the chance you took. Look
at how long AEA members stay with their
current employers - 10 years, on average.
Clearly, we have the formula for retaining
good talent; we simply need a formula for
attracting new talent.
Therefore, the AEA Educational
Foundation would like to help and has
a solution to find and develop your next
technician. In fact, we will help you find
them by placing no-charge help-wanted
advertisements in upcoming issues of
Avionics News. The AEA Educational
Foundation will underwrite the advertising
expense of any shop looking to hire entrylevel technicians. Interested shops should
simply contact Lauren McFarland at
laurenm@aea.net for details and how to
get started.
Once you have identified your new
employee and are ready to send them for
training, the AEA Educational Foundation
would like to invite them for some serious
hands-on avionics instruction at our worldclass facility. Coming off our busiest
training year in 2017, we are already
adding more courses and more dates in
2018. If an AEA member shop hires an
entry-level technician in 2018, we will
extend our discounted academic rate for the
first course they attend at AEA international
headquarters. Yes, you're reading correctly:
Our offer equates to a generous discount
on training and a free recruiting service.
Happy New Year and happy new hire! q

system and a microcomputer to control the FMS, that allowed for the stability, ease
of operation and fundamental ability to reuse the unmanned aircraft. Most military
unmanned aircraft throughout the 20th century were single-use, disposable vehicles. And if the carcasses of RC models left in the dark hallows of my closet were
any indication, the ability to control RC aircraft has always been a challenge.
The exponential growth of the military's use of reusable unmanned aircraft took
off in the last decade of the 20th century, roughly in 2000. Knowing how long it
takes from research and development to market, it is probably more accurate to
estimate the technological growth as early as the 1990s.
Recreational drones (as we know them today) date back as early as 1990 but
became popular in the recreational kit form as the Draganfly quad helicopter in
1998. It was 12 years later, in 2010, that we had the first consumer drone. The
AR.Drone was ready to fly and controlled solely by a Wi-Fi connection. It was
produced by the French company Parrot, which continues to produce many of
the commercially-available recreational drones. I remember back in 2013 as I
watched a YouTube video in amazement published by TED, titled: The astounding
athletic power of quadcopters. The degree of automation and reaction that was programmed into these tiny aircraft was simply astounding.
But even the quad copter isn't new. Similar to the history of the unmanned aircraft; the history of the quad copter dates to the end of the 19th century: the fourrotor Breguet-Richet Gyroplane No.1 flew in 1907.
Be careful what you ask for!
Today, the technological marriage between the military, recreational and commercial drones are advancing this technology at an unprecedented rate. The technology industry argues that drones are different. While they may or may not be
different, if they win the argument and the legacy regulations start to bend, we will
be in for a wild ride.
While this technology and the use of this technology offers some new applications, there are some basic principles:
* The unmanned aircraft is fundamentally the same as a manned aircraft
from the FMS out to the wingtip.
* The control of the aircraft, that is the input to the FMS, is either manned,
unmanned or a hybrid.
* The control of an unmanned aircraft can be either direct through radio control or indirect through computer control.
* The operational use of unmanned aircraft mirrors the use of manned aircraft.
* While these aircraft are highly automated, they are still programmed (by a
human) and are not yet self-learning autonomous vehicles.
As the author Stephen King wrote: "Sooner or later, everything old is new
again." While the unmanned aircraft is certainly not new, and the quad copter is not new either, the focused resources on this sector of aviation, and the
effort the technology industry is investing to show that, despite the historical
facts, drones are a new and novel industry, tell me this is a game-changer.
The operational use of these easy-to-use unmanned reusable aircraft is a
dynamic shift in the aerospace conversation and will ultimately affect how
we do business. q
