organized and sent out a battery charger on the Trans
Australian Train, which passes through Kalgoorlie and Forrest
on its way from Perth to Sydney. The pilot and the refueler met
the train and recharged the battery, only to find that the starter
motor had also been damaged."
Goldfields Air Services contacted the pilot's maintenance
provider in Sydney, coordinated replacement parts, and flew an
engineer out to replace the battery and starter motor to help him
on his way.
"He wasn't familiar with operating in such high
temperatures," Gaulke said. "Our pilot spoke to him about
starting a hot engine on very hot days."
Filling the gap
Goldfields Air Services began in 1982 after SkyWest and
TransWest merged and left Kalgoorlie, abandoning air service
to remote communities. The small charter service started with
a couple of Cessna 210s and a 310, and eventually grew to
include a fleet with Cessna 402s and 404s.
"In 2010, I started with the company as a junior pilot,"
McQuie said. "About 18 months later, I had the opportunity to
purchase the company along with the then-chief engineer. At
that time, one of our major contracts required turbine aircraft,
so we added King Airs."
King Airs proved to be a successful addition and essentially
make up the backbone of the operation today. 2014 was a
turning point for McQuie when he purchased a 10-year-old
King Air B200 equipped with Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21
avionics.
"This was a massive step forward for us as a company
- there is no going back," he said. "The sheer volume of

information and capabilities that an avionics suite of this nature
provides is quite astounding to first-time users. Our other King
Air is an older B200C BL-30 fitted with the factory cargo door.
It has had a fantastic retrofit with dual Garmin 650 GPS/nav/
comms and Avidyne avionics."
In 2017, McQuie purchased his business partner's share
of the company, allowing Gaulke to take on the roles of chief
engineer and head of aircraft airworthiness and maintenance.
"Trevor's experience, both military and civil, brings great
capabilities to our company," McQuie said. "Having in-house
EI&R (electrical, instrument and radio) license coverage is a
little bit of a luxury for an organization of our size where we
have historically had to address this on an as-required basis
remotely."
Recently, Gaulke worked on upgrading a couple of the
charter aircraft with ADS-B. The Beechcraft B60 Duke ended
up being the most challenging.
"It's a small airframe with a lot of systems," Gaulke
explained. "It provided some challenges to fit the equipment
in, after which, the Garmin GNS 430 software upgrade did not
take. After discussing the problem with ACS Marcomm and
Garmin, we got the required incremental upgrade allowing the
installation to progress to a successful completion. Both ACS
and Garmin have been very helpful in solving any problems we
encounter."
For now, Gaulke is in the process of planning a full radio
upgrade to the charter organization's 1979 Cessna C172N
equipped with an original Cessna audio panel, Icom A200 VHF
communications transceiver, Collins ADF and a Garmin 100
GPS. After the new year, the team will upgrade the cockpit with
a Garmin GNS 430 GPS/nav/comm, Garmin GTR 225 comm
radio and a Garmin audio panel. The upgrade will standardize
the aircraft across the fleet, allowing Goldfields Air Services to
keep flying passengers safely deep into the desert. q
