discoloration, which can identify
the onset of corrosion.

According to Jeckell, "99 percent
of our antennas achieve ground
through the mounting screws,
so one of the things technicians
must understand is FAA Advisory
Circular 43.13-2B, which advises
that you should have no greater
than .003 Ohms of resistance
between any mounting screw and
the aircraft's skin. If you have more
resistance than that, you are looking
at some heavy corrosion, and it
needs to be taken care of.
"If the ground plane is too small
or your grounding is poor, the
antenna will not operate properly.
Probably the most sensitive to
grounding and ground plane are
the blade type VOR/glideslope
antennas. They must have very
good grounding to work."
Jeckell also said that grounding
issues can be especially problematic
with the newer composite airplanes,
and the previously mentioned
FAA advisory circular has specific
information on dealing with
"plastic" airplanes.
Another tip Jeckell shared
was to never paint an antenna.
"Owners and technicians want to
paint an antenna in the field, and
the paint detunes the antenna like
nobody's business," he said. "You
have no way of measuring the
antennas VSWR to determine if it's
meeting specifications. Also, you
immediately cancel any warranty
on the antenna. The best advice is
to not ever paint any antenna."
As for maintaining an antenna,
Pacheco said that it's as simple as a
periodic spray with a mix of aircraft
cleaning solution and fresh water,
followed by a wipe down with a
clean, dry cloth. Look at it as a
good time to inspect the condition
of the antenna and look for signs of

C is for coaxial
While you probably don't
think of it this way, the coaxial
interconnect cable between the
receiver/transmitter and the
antenna is an important part of the
entire system. Because of that, its
condition should be a key part of
any antenna system troubleshooting
plan.
Typically, if the cable isn't
damaged, the problem areas are
at the connectors where moisture,
dirt and corrosion can build and
weaken the electrical signal. A
good practice is to unscrew the
connector, inspect it for corrosion,
and then give it a quick squirt of
an approved corrosion-inhibiting
compound.
While the condition of the
coaxial cable is always important,
if you're upgrading the aircraft
to ADS-B Out, it becomes an
especially critical part of a
properly-performing system.
"We're seeing a lot of installations
now that are converting from an
older Mode C transponder to a
higher-power Mode S, extended
squitter ADS-B Out transponder,"
said William Tramper, manager
of field service engineering for L3
Aviation Products. "With the older
Mode C systems, you don't have a
high transmit power requirement or
a requirement on the cable for what's
called the attenuation or the insertion
loss. The insertion loss on an older
coax cable might be 2.5 decibels or
higher, so you're probably fine with
RG-58 coax for that type of use. But
when you upgrade the transponder
to Mode S/ADS-B Out, you are
increasing the transmit power so the
allowable insertion loss for the cable
is going to be reduced to 1.5 decibels
or less."
