Travis Rife of Aircraft and Avionics Sales Inc.

Did your interest in
aviation and electronics
start when you were
a boy?
I grew up in Lewisberry,
Pennsylvania, always having a passion for aviation based on Top Gun.
I love bicycles and Legos. When it
was raining, it was Legos. When it
was sunny, it was my bicycle.

Did you study
electronics in college?

Yes, I went to the Pittsburgh
Institute of Aeronautics and studied
aircraft electronics technology.

What kind of job did you
envision getting when
you graduated?

repairs aircraft electrical squawks,
performs the checks required by
Federal Aviation Regulations 91.411
and 91.413, and much more.
Recently, Avionics News spoke
with avionics technician Travis Rife
to learn more about his work and
his life outside the shop.

With...

I knew I had a knack for electronics and electricity, and I followed
the path of least resistance. After
graduating, I started as an avionics tech at Harrisburg Jet Center.
I could have made more money
driving forklifts, but I was anxious
to get my foot in the door. The
smallest airplane I worked on there
was a 152. They also had a flight
school with 152s and 172s, and a
charter operation with a Cessna
421 and two King Airs. I also got to
work with two helicopter operators, which probably had 30 ships
between them. I was there until
2008 when it was sold. I stayed with
the new company and by 2009, my
manager wanted to start a shop
and asked me to come along.

Aircraft and Avionics Sales was
started by Wayne Haubert and his
son, Paul, built on Wayne's work.
We're located in New Cumberland,
Pennsylvania, at Capital City Airport.
I am the avionics inspector and lead
tech. We're a three-person shop, so
I am the de facto low man on the
totem pole.

What kind of airplanes
do you work on?

I work mainly on single- and twinengine private aircraft and helicopters.

What do you like best
about your job?
It doesn't feel like work.
It may be the environment
that we've created or how
long I've worked with Wayne
and Paul. I have a passion
for airplanes and found this
niche market that I'm good
at. I get to go to work and
use my brain, troubleshoot
and repair things every day.

Do you like
troubleshooting?

Yes, it's fantastic. I feel like a
detective, and when I find the problem, I take the detective hat off and
put on the surgeon hat and grab my
soldering iron.
