4. BE HEARD. To be a leader, you must lead. Sure, you
should have managers and supervisors who drive the daily
tactical work, but you're still responsible for selling the vision
and values of your shop. So don't hide in your office. Get out
and about, and get noticed. Share your knowledge and experience freely so your people know what you stand for.
But know, too, the wisdom of asking questions. For example,
in meetings, show you're on top of team projects with smart,
relevant queries on progress, challenges and plans of action - and
expect equally intelligent answers. Not only are you showing
you're engaged, but you'll also inspire deep thinking that helps
your team solve difficult problems, according to Morse-Dell.
5. NETWORK. Few things are more powerful in promoting
your brand than what people say about you, so make connections with folks inside and outside your shop. Take time with
colleagues, employees, business groups, and customers so
they hear your story, learn of your successes, and get to bend
your ear, as well. Outside your shop, this can help you find
new business, new partnerships and new employees, according

access to you - to share their concerns, ask questions, and
hear your mission straight from the source - whether that's
during a group gathering for lunch or coffee one-on-ones.
6. BE A CHEERLEADER. Demonstrate an endorsement
mindset. That is, know what's working in your shop, and recognize those who are making it happen. By supporting them,
you're reinforcing your reputation as someone who celebrates
the team and provides emotional support to all people - which
can be contagious among your entire staff, according to
Morse-Dell. That can be as simple as a "Great job!" or a handwritten thank-you note for specific actions you admire. The
gift of appreciation and respect is remembered for a long time,
even if you're a hard-as-nails leader.
7. SHOW YOUR EXPERTISE. You actively follow the
news and industry innovation that affects your shop. Use that
knowledge to show you're an expert with valuable insight
for employees, partners and customers - whether that's an
outwardly facing blog, social media account, speech, op-ed
article, or white paper, or it's an inwardly facing quarterly
"state of the industry" conversation with your staff. By doing
any of these, you'll be known for something bigger than just
