being "The Boss" or "just another" avionics shop. Your brand
isn't only about what you know, it's about what others know
you know, according to career advisor Megan Dallacamina.
8. LOOK THE PART. The "packaging" of your brand can be
just as important as the substance, and you want your personal
presentation and nonverbal communication to match the values
you proscribe. That includes considering your posture when
interacting with staff and customers - you probably want to
lean in, show you're actively listening, speak clearly, and so
forth, according to Lynn Taylor, author of Tame Your Office
Tyrant. You might also want your appearance to match the
qualities you're projecting, which may make this time for new
shop shirts; after all, looking appropriately sharp can make you
stand out in the right way.
9. BE CONFIDENT. You must show confidence in yourself
and your brand before others feel confidence in you. If you
stumble there, others will notice. Yet that might require you to
step outside your comfort zone, according to Morse-Dell, for
example, to build on your ability to remain positive. No one
wants to work with a complainer; instead, your people and
your customers want to associate with someone who's positive.
So look for the half-full glass.

Keep that in mind when you face a failure. A big part of
your brand should be how you respond to adversity, according
to Mark Saddic of career-advisors CCI Consulting. Eventually,
people will forget about the mishap, but they will remember
how you reacted - whether you blew your stack or you went
into constructive problem-solving mode.
10. KEEP LEARNING. As the industry changes, you change.
And as your shop changes, maintaining your brand requires
you to keep ahead of the curve so your skills and knowledge
stay relevant. Keep track of your accomplishments and failures, and look for ways to create more of the former and fewer
of the latter with classes, seminars, books, podcasts, hands-on
participation in projects, or whatever medium engages you. If
you need help, ask your advisory board to point you toward
topics to pursue.
By piecing together the parts that help you build and fulfill
your personal brand, you're taking control of your reputation
before others can do it for you. And when it comes to influencing and leading your team - and cultivating your valuable
clients - putting the work into that brand ensures you have a
strong foundation that each of those relationships can be built
upon.
