NORSEE requirements are based on established industry
standards and do not bypass existing certification
protocols or FAA oversight.
After running tests and providing the documentation
for FAA evaluation, Guardian received the first NORSEE
approval for its iFDR 150 and 250 USB power supplies
in Part 23 aircraft and Part 27 and Part 29 rotorcraft. It
followed the same process for its smartPlane components
that bring improved safety and more efficient and
economical aircraft maintenance if operators take full
advantage of the system's capabilities.
There are three components in the supplemental VFR
system. The smartLink connects the installed avionics
to an iPad running Guardian's smartMFD app. When
the app is connected to the internet (using the iPad's
available options, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or a 3G cellular
connection), it uploads all of the flight and data to
Guardian's smartCloud, where users can review it using
the associated web app.
Before the smartPlane system, the flight and engine
data produced by the installed avionics systems, the
primary flight displays, navigation systems, and engine
monitors, was essentially lost, according to Vij. The
smartMFD app records it all. "We've tested it to 250
hours of cumulative data," he said. After that, it starts
recording over the oldest data. After each flight - or
during it, for real-time tracking, if the iPad has a 3G
connection - the smartMFD automatically uploads the
data to the smartCloud.
Besides collecting and transmitting the data to the
cloud, the smartMFD is a user-customized big-screen
multifunction monitor. It can display engine data

graphically or as a trend, each with customized alert
threshold and warning. Understanding that most iPads
will be working as an EFB during the flight, smartMFD
runs constantly in the background, Vij noted. "But
if something crosses the threshold, if the oil temp
increases, for example, the warning pops up in the
foreground."
The smartMFD also includes EFB capabilities.
Employing Seattle Avionics database subscriptions,

it will display VFR and IFR charts. On aircraft with
ADS-B In, it will display traffic and weather, including
METAR and TAF with AIRMET/SIGMET map overlays.
Its altitude and attitude data display is a PFD backup.
And it keeps pilot and aircraft logs and discrepancy
(squawk) reports.
