With flight data uploaded to smartCloud, its web app
displays each flight as 2-D on a map or users can export
a 3-D view to Google Earth, said Vij, and there are a
number of ways to present and analyze the engine data.
For the time being, purchasing a smartPlane system
includes a free six-month subscription to smartCloud.
Vij said the company would announce its subscription
fee at EAA AirVenture 2018.
Through the web app, owners can give others, such
as a repair station, access to their smartCloud data and
the ability to manipulate its presentation for efficient
analysis, according to Vij. Watching the trends of
such parameters as exhaust gas and cylinder head
temperatures, fuel flow, and others, technicians and
knowledgeable owners can diagnose problems - and
address them - before they become a threat to operating
efficiency and/or safety.
For avionics repair stations that lack the personnel
or time to study these trends to diagnose an
engine's mechanical health, there are others, such as
SavvyAnalysis, that provide this service. Analyzing the
fuel, ignition and induction performance data can reveal
a multitude of problems, from inefficient or improper
operating procedures and failing sensor probes to faulty
wiring and dirty fuel injectors.
The smartPlane system can only record the data
provided by the installed avionics systems. It works with
the leading primary flight displays, GPS navigators and

engine monitors, said Vij, and Guardian is constantly
upgrading the list of compatible avionics. That includes
companies such as Advanced Flight Systems that cater
to the experimental, amateur-built aircraft market.
Pilot need and the installed avionics determine which
smartLink makes the most practical iPad connection.
All of them include Guardian's trusted carbon monoxide
detection technology, which delivers its warning to
the smartMFD display. RS-232 connections ensure a
hardwired relationship with the primary flight display,
GPS navigator and engine management/monitor system.
The smartLink then transmits the position, attitude and
engine data to the smartMFD via Bluetooth or USB.
An engine monitor provides the smartPlane's baseline
flight data recoding benefit. Logic suggests that it would
be a good component to pair with the installation of
such a monitor. With baseline configuration, aircraft
owners have three smartLink choices. Two of them are
the smart554, one panel mounted and the other remote.
Both provide a Bluetooth link to the smartMFD, a
carbon monoxide detector, and an attitude and heading
reference system that provides basic flight data to the
iPad as well as a backup PFD display.
High flyers should consider the panel-mounted
smartLink 555. In addition to the flight data link, carbon
monoxide detector and AHRS, it includes a pulse
oximeter that measures the blood oxygen levels of every
occupant who can insert an index finger into it. The
measurement takes seconds and is displayed on the MFD.
Not only is it an excellent hedge against hypoxia when
flying at altitude, it is an excellent tool for adjusting the
flow of supplemental oxygen to ensure that the occupants
are properly saturated with the life-giving gas.
Aircraft owners with an engine monitor and a primary
flight display have two smartLink choices. Because
it draws this data from the PFD, the panel-mounted
smartLink 650 does not include an AHRS, but it does
incorporate two Guardian USB power outlets, as well as
the ubiquitous CO detector. It links with the smartMFD
either through the USB connection that also powers the
iPad, or through the Bluetooth connection.
The smartLink 851 is a remote-mount link that does
it all: flight data link, CO detector, AHRS and USB
power. Ideally, said Vij, the smart851 rides on the back
of Guardian's smartPanel mounts for the iPad Air/Pro
9.7-inch or iPad Mini. Like all of the smartPlane system
