in Part 23 aircraft. When installed in an aircraft with a
PFD, its AHRS takes precedence, with the smart851's
AHRS standing by as a backup should there be a
problem with the primary system, Vij added. And this
is true for all of the AHRS-equipped smartLinks in
aircraft with PFDs.
Owners who opt for a smartLink that does not
include it should add a certified USB power supply
to their installation to ensure reliable operation of
their iPad. Guardian offers single and dual USB plugs
as well as square and circular faceplate options. The
circular faceplate fits the standard cigarette lighter
outlet. There's also an adapter for a 2.25-inch-diameter
instrument panel cutout.
The same goes for an iPad mount. As many have
learned by experience, the iPad is technology that
doesn't like heat and will shut down before it gets too
toasty. Guardian designed its mounts to keep the iPad
comfortable. Each one has a built-in 5/8-inch tapered
hose/tube port that connects to a standard avionics
cooling fan and cooling channels in the mount itself
that circulate this cooling air behind the iPad.
There are no minimum requirements for an iPad
destined for the smartPlane system, Vij said. "Size
always matters with an iPad, but physical size depends
on the available real estate on the instrument panel.
When it comes to storage space, more is always better."
For pilots running apps like ForeFlight or Garmin
Pilot with VFR and IFR navdata in the foreground
and smartMFD in the background, "64 gigabytes is
more than enough storage," Vij said. With all of its
computing power, the iPad still won't break a digital
sweat, which is why he calls smartPlane a "living
system" that will continue to grow in capability.
Because it is not a certified equipment, once it's tested
and ready for release, it takes about 30 minutes to
upload the updated software to Apple. q
