Human factors
in maintenance

ast month, I presented a paper on human
factors in maintenance at the Seminario
Internacional en Seguridad AĆ©rea in
Monterrey, Mexico. As I was preparing my presentation,
I had an interesting observation: Managing human factors
only works when you have a management system to
support it. While we routinely include human factors
training in our safety management training, I also noticed
that managing human factors only works when there is a
culture that endorses it.
As industry professionals, we have received human
factors training for decades. I remember my first training
40 years ago, and the underlying tone was "you" - you
need to do this; you shouldn't do that; you, you, you!
Sure, I should do this or that; they were simple concepts
that made sense. All except the part that required
everyone around me to do the same thing and embrace
the concepts the same. As we know, that wasn't always
the case.
Many years ago, I attended a human factors in
maintenance course in Canada during the transition from
human factors in operations (flight) to human factors in
maintenance. Unfortunately, the message was completely
lost in the course developer's complete lack of
understanding maintenance and the maintenance industry.
It focused on the "cause" of human factors errors, not the

solution to manage those errors. It focused on distraction;
stress; lack of communication; and assumptions.
Not once during the two-day training did the instructor
acknowledge that these are factors we all experience
in our daily lives - all day; at work; at home; driving
a vehicle; and everywhere in every action. He gave
us a laundry list of what not to do. For the mechanic,
technician or engineer, not once did he highlight what

the managers, supervisors and owners need to do to
encourage and support an individual's need to manage
"their" human factors. That is, what management
system needs to be in place to support a human factors
initiative? What corporate culture do we need to empower
individuals to make good human factors decisions?
Several years ago, Dr. Bill Johnson gave an outstanding
presentation on human factors in maintenance at the AEA
International Convention & Trade Show. The AEA staff
captured his presentation, and it is the basis for one of the
association's online training programs. Johnson used the
